Disclaimer: I received a free copy of the movie for review purposes. This review is in addition to my other Disney Planes and Little Mermaid Event articles. All experiences and opinions are my own. Yours may differ.
The Little Mermaid is a Disney classic. Having been released in 1989 I grew up with this movie. On Sunday’s I was only allowed to watch Disney movies and so this movie was in my rotation. I loved this movie so much as a child and now I am enjoying the opportunity to pass this movie onto the next generation, my kids.
I received a copy of the new Diamond Edition of The Little Mermaid to go along with all my other Little Mermaid coverage such as seeing the new Little Mermaid products, seeing original Little Mermaid artwork at Disney’s Animation Research Library, the interviews with Ron Clements and John Musker, and my interview with Jodi Benson.
Since I watched this movie so much as a child I have almost the whole movie memorized word for word. When I popped in the Diamond Edition there was a noticeable different. Before owning this copy we only had the VHS which is considerably darker. I love how beautiful all the colors are on the new Blu Ray. It is fantastic.
When we sat down and had family movie night with The Little Mermaid it was funny because I was the one annoying my kids by talking and singing along. Usually that role is reversed with the kids! 🙂
I was super excited to see all the special features on the Blu Ray. We had seen a couple of them while in Los Angeles but I wanted to see them ALL! I LOVED the lunchtime lecture with Howard Ashman. It was so fun to be able to see him talk about the movie and the music and explaining all of his thoughts in regards to the music. I think that was a priceless video! I also really enjoyed the interviews with the animators. How fun to hear a little bit about what it is like to be a Disney animator. I really enjoyed learning about the deleted character Harold.
When little attention spans were running out it was fun to switch on the Crab E Oke sing along songs! I think they did a good adding fun lyrics on the screen with the songs. The animation of the lyrics was very clever and catchy! It was so much fun.
One part of the special features I didn’t like was the “Part of Your World” music video from Carly Rae Jepsen. Perhaps because I grew up with The Little Mermaid, maybe it’s because I saw Jodi Benson sing “Part of Your World” live, but I thought it was horrible!
The Little Mermaid has been apart of my whole life and I’m very excited to be seeing it released from the vault and coming to Blu Ray combo in the Diamond Edition! Also being released is a Blu Ray 3D combo pack so you can enjoy the underwater adventure like never before! You can get your copy tomorrow, October 1!
