National Children’s Dental Health Month Sparks Awareness

February 25, 2014 By Stefanie

February is National Children’s Dental Health Month. One of the reasons for this event is to build public awareness about the importance of children, very young children, visiting a dentist. The state of children’s dental health in the United States is appalling. Tooth decay is the leading childhood disease, and it is one hundred percent preventable. More than 40% of children have at least one cavity, and most have more. Parents should pay attention to the information about free dental visits and care than comes through their child’s public school.

Children need to see a dentist as soon as they get their first teeth. This is usually around age 1; yes, age 1. Many people think that children should start seeing a dentist when they are in Kindergarten, but this is incorrect. The main reason is that serious tooth decay can lead to death in small children, and it is much easier to fight bacteria early than it is to deal with the damage it can do over time. Even before all of a child’s teeth are in, parents need to gently brush a child’s teeth and gums to prevent bacteria build up. Remember that teeth are just below the surface of the gums.

The primary causes of such rampant tooth decay in children are the foods they eat, and improper brushing. Eating and drinking too many sugary foods is a major problem. “The liquid sugars, juices, sticky things like fruit snacks and this is basically what our kids eat every day,” said Dr. Cox. Further, children are not able to brush their teeth properly until about age 10. Thus, parents and guardians need to brush their teeth with their children so they can monitor and help teach good brushing habits. This includes teaching children how to floss properly by about age 2 or three (once teeth are crowding next to each other). It may be useful to buy a spinning toothbrush for your child. These tend to remove 70% more of plaque. There are many brands that make these battery operated toothbrushes for kids. They are cute and make brushing fun. Also, tooth brushes with lights and two-minute timers are attractive and entice children to brush regularly.

There are several ways you can help your child avoid getting cavities. Cavities can be passed on from adults to children. Usually this happens when a pacifier is not cleaned properly. Be sure never to place a pacifier in your own mouth, and then to your child. Always clean pacifiers correctly first. Next, do not allow your child to sleep after drinking a bottle of juice. This practice increases the likelihood of cavities. Third, determine if the water your child is drinking is fluorinated and talk to a dentist to see if fluoride treatments are recommended. Finally, you can check to see if your child is a good candidate for dental sealants. This is a film placed on the back teeth to prevent food particles from getting into the grooves and crevices of these teeth. Most insurance plans cover this procedure.

Dental care for children is important for the medical reasons discussed above, but there are also social reasons. Any elementary school teacher will tell you that kids are very aware of things like dirty teeth and bad breath and they will tease and haze a child with these conditions. Of course, you want your son or daughter to feel good about how they look and to have a great smile. Getting started early with good dental hygiene is one of parents’ most important duties.

Moreover, the longevity of teeth whitening results varies from person to person, influenced by factors such as oral hygiene practices, diet, and lifestyle choices. Maintaining good oral hygiene, including regular brushing and flossing, is crucial to prolong the effects of teeth whitening. Additionally, individuals are often advised to avoid certain foods and beverages that can contribute to staining, such as coffee, tea, red wine, and tobacco products. Furthermore, incorporating regular dental check-ups into one’s routine ensures that any potential issues are identified early on and addressed promptly.turismo dentale
