Wreath Making: 4 Ways to Make Your Own Wreath

September 13, 2013 By Stefanie

In the past, wreath making was saved for the holidays and special occasions, but the concept of do-it-yourself wreaths has come a long way. Many doors are covered in unique and creative concepts, ranging from sandals and sunglasses for summer to vibrant fabrics and silk flowers for year-round styles. The following piece provides you with different ways of making wreaths, including how to use different materials and ideas for types of wreath forms.

Fabric Scrap Wreath

The first type of wreath form you can work with is a wire wreath. If you plan on using this, fabric scraps are going to be your new best friend. Collect all the little scraps of fabric you have in your craft room and start cutting them into strips. The fabric scrap wreath is one of the easiest to make. You can use one style of fabric for your strips or 15 different styles. You simply cut them into similarly sized strips and start tying the strips into knots around the wire wreath form, until the wire is completely covered.

Fabric

If you have a foam wreath at home but would prefer not to use flowers or other embellishments, you can cover it in fabric. There are different ways of using fabric, such as making fabric flowers, using square pieces of fabric or fabric scraps to insert into the foam, or covering it entirely in one type of fabric. To cover it entirely, cut your fabric into strips so it can be wrapped around the wreath. Hot glue is the best way to secure the fabric to the wreath. A cheaper option is to use colored tissue paper, like red, white and blue for a patriotic wreath.

Yarn

If you want to spend less money on your wreath, all you need is a cheap foam wreath, yarn and a hot glue gun. This is an easy project but one that can also be a little time consuming. Start with any size or shape of foam wreath you want. These are often found at discount craft stores and dollar stores. Put a dot of hot glue on the wreath and start the yarn here. You want to wrap it around the wreath, making sure the yarn is tight together so you don’t see the foam underneath. Add hot glue after every few wraps to make it secure. After the wreath is covered in yarn, feel free to leave it simple or add flowers, or other embellishments.

Connecting Objects

Use objects you have lying around to tie or glue together and make a wreath. This doesn’t require any type of wreath form if you don’t want to. Maybe you have toys from playground equipment manufacturers, or you want to make a summer wreath with flip-flops. Connect the items with super glue or tie them together. You’re taking the items and making a round shape in order to turn them into a wreath.

Making wreaths is simple and easy and can create beautiful and unique home décor. If you still want another idea check out Stefanie’s Balloon Wreath or Tulle Tutu Wreath.
