Vitamins: Gummys VS Chewables

April 5, 2013 By Stefanie

vitaminsI have a very picky eater at my house. When we went in to the doctor for my children’s yearly check ups I spoke to her about his nutrition. I, of course, talked to her about my concerns with his lack of eating vegetables and most meat. She told me to just be sure to keep offering him the foods, that hopefully he would eventually start eating those foods and to remember to give him a daily vitamin. I told her we loved vitamins at our house! My children always remind me to give them a gummy vitamin. My doctor told me that I needed to switch from a gummy vitamin to a chewable.

It turns out that gummy vitamins do not have iron in them. Since gummys look like fruit snacks or candy, the makers of gummy vitamins decided it was not smart to include iron along with all the other nutrients in case a child get his/her hands on a bottle and consumes all of them. Taking too much iron can be very dangerous for children. It can cause nausea, abdominal pain, coma and even death. Iron poisoning is very serious and will lead to hospitalization.

Since chewable vitamins look more like medicine they do include the needed iron. Iron is important to the body as it creates Hemoglobin in the red blood cells that help carry oxygen to your lungs.

If you have a picky eater like me, than your child may be lacking the iron they need. Try using chewable vitamins to help him or her get the iron they need. At our house we use Flintstone vitamins. In the mean time we are working on opening our son’s food horizons.

Do you have any tricks to help a picky eater eat?
