The Story Behind TinkerBell and the Legend of the Neverbeast

February 25, 2015 By Stefanie

I love Disney Toon Studios! It’s one of my favorite places to go because it is always decorated with the latest movie – like extremely decorated! It was so fun to spend an afternoon in Disney Toon Studios interviewing the makers of TinkerBell and the Legend of the Neverbeast. We got to talk to a ton of amazing people. Today I’m sharing my interview with the Director Steve Loter and Producer Michael Wigert.

The story of TinkerBell and theLegend of the Neverbeast is a good one. Director Steve Loter took the majority of the story from his life. He is scared of dogs, especially big dogs but his sweet daughter loves them. She has a huge heart for animals, especially big dogs. This relationship and difference in themselves sparked the idea for the Neverbeast. The Neverbeast is this huge, unknown animal that lives in the forrest outside of Pixie Hollow. Fawn, the animal talent fairy, has a huge heart for all animals so the struggle in the film is in dealing with this giant, unknown animal and how it relates to Pixie Hollow.

So according to Steve the message is this:

It’s beautiful to think with an open heart. To see the world through that prism, through that perspective a wonderful thing, but you also have to think with your head. You need the balance, you need the balance to have a happy life and I thought that’s exactly the story that I wanted to tell.

Hanging-With-Gruff

So what was the challenge in the film? According the Michael:

Now Gruff, Gruff proved to be a little bit of a challenge because making this giant 6 ft. character act and play against this little 5 inch fairy that was a little bit more difficult.

Since Gruff was a character in Steve’s head he did have a round about idea of what he wanted him to look like.

So he has the walk of a Hippo or a Rhino. He has coarse fur like a Yack and it’s white. He has these floppy dog ears. He has an Armadillo tail that he can hang on stuff, but it also acts like a cat. You could tell his mood by the swinging of the tail and these big beautiful green cow eyes that you see you’re reflection in. Fawn sees a reflection in that.

One thing both Michael and Steve are grateful for is that the story remained the same, from pitch to finish. John Lassater (their boss) really got the emotion behind the film and so nothing changed while it was in process.

They said casting the voices was pretty easy. They knew they wanted Ginnifer Goodwin for Fawn. She has a cheerful bubbly voice so they needed a contrast for that in the contrasting character Nyx. Nyx is a scout fairy and takes her job of protecting Pixie  Hollow very seriously. Rosario Dawnson does a great job playing the role.

They also spoke about how the music for this film was important. Steve Loter really connected with an artist named Bleu, so we were also privileged to see a presentation from him. Stay tuned for that.

Neverbeast-Theater

Because the story is based on Steve’s real life events, the emotions are real. Grab some tissues when you see TinkerBell and the Legend of the Neverbeast coming to Blu-ray combo March 3.

Stay tuned because I have a lot more TinkerBell and the Legend of the Neverbeast information coming! Also, don’t miss my previous #McFarlandUSAEvent posts also including Big Hero 6 and Feast!
