5 Reasons to Consider Pre-Engagement Counseling

May 21, 2020 By Stefanie

When two people get together, there is something that needs to be considered, and that is pre-engagement counseling. What is pre-engagement counseling? This is when you get counseling prior to getting engaged or even married. I wanted to share 5 reasons to consider pre-engagement counseling.

#1. It Prepares You For Life Together

When you’re in love, it doesn’t seem like anything can tear you apart. However, in the beginning, love has a way of blinding the reality of how things really work. When you seek pre-engagement counseling, you are preparing for a life together. Preparing for life better together will help your relationship last longer. No one knows how their life will go after marriage, but if something will give you a better start, then why not give it a try?

#2. Helps You Learn How to Communicate

One issue a person may have in a marriage is communication. Pre-marriage counseling can help you learn how to communicate properly with your soon to be spouse. When you sit down and work with a counselor, you will be able to learn valuable strategies that will help you in your life. Without communication, your life may be rougher than you intend it to be. Getting married means you’ll need to be decent at communicating and counseling can help with that.

#3. Counseling Helps to Have a Third Party

Sometimes it’s good to have a mediator. Someone who can look at both sides and not be on either side. That way you know who is really in the wrong and what things you both have to work on. It’s easy to point fingers in any relationship but harder to see your own faults. Counselors help all parties see both their faults and help you deal with the faults of the other.

#4. Set Yourself Up for a Good Life

Another reason to consider pre-engagement counseling is that you set yourself up for a good life. You see that you’re able to bond and work together to make things work for you both. Counseling is never a negative thing and when you start earlier in your relationship, it makes it easy to keep going back. #5. Counseling is a Small Time Commitment

If you know that counseling will overall help your marriage, then you should go for it. This is a small-time commitment to something that can truly help your marriage for a lifetime. Every single marriage needs a good foundation. Pre-engagement counseling can help you unpack emotions and issues now, so that they are not a problem later.

Have you considered pre-engagement counseling? If so, what made you want to do it?
