Disclaimer: As part of my trip to Los Angeles provided by Disney I got to meet Rosebud, one of the stars of Super Buddies. I received a complimentary copy of Super Buddies for review purposes. All experiences and opinions are my own. Yours may differ.
On my last day in Los Angeles after having been to the PLANES premiere and experiencing some amazing Disney experiences such as visiting Animation Research Library, interviewing Jodi Benson, Ron Clements and John Musker, we still had an important meet and greet to attend. We got to meet Rosebud from the newest Disney Super Buddies film and one of the dog trainers that worked on the movie. It was pretty interesting talking with him and finding out how they worked with the animals during the making of Super Buddies.
For being a puppy, Rosebud did a very good job being obedient and staying on her puppy stand so we could all snap as many photos as we could take. Once we were done getting individual shots of Rosebud we all got in line to get up close and personal with her. I am not much of an animal person and I’m a little nervous around dogs, so I was a little weary of my turn. I wanted to be a team player, though, so I took my turn. I pet the soft puppy and got close for some pictures… until she tried to kiss my cheek. Then I was done!
I learned several interesting things about the making of Super Buddies from talking with the trainer.
- They get the puppies at 8 weeks. The puppies get a 2 week “Buddies boot camp” and then they film for 4 weeks. By the time the dogs are 14 weeks they have grown too big and must retire. A new puppy then takes over.
- Puppies are like people ad some of them didn’t ant to do the tasks they were assigned. The example we were given was that it was one puppy’s job to roll in the mud, but he didn’t love rolling in the mud so they let a different puppy do that part of it. They didn’t make the puppies do things they didn’t want to do.
- They train the dogs with positive reinforcement. All of the trainers used the same “treats”, which was really just dog food, so that the puppies didn’t have “favorites”.
- Half of the training the puppies go through is to desensitize them and get them to ignore the lights and the cameras and all the movie making equipment.
Here is a clip of the trainers working with the puppies.
Super Buddies Review
My family and I were lucky enough to receive an early copy of Super Buddies to review. I haven’t ever seen a Super Buddies movie before this one, so I was really excited. We had a family movie night and gathered today on the couch to see those cute puppies.
An ordinary day at Fernfield Farms turns extraordinary when Budderball, Mudbud, B-Dawg, Buddha and Rosebud discover mysterious rings that grant them each a unique super power. Before you can say, “Buddies, assemble,” the pups unleash their amazing abilities and race to the rescue when a shape-shifting bully from outer space threatens the planet. But can they succeed in kicking major tail without revealing their new secret identities?
My kids really love things having to do with Super Hero’s so they were excited for super hero puppies! The movie itself is very over the top cheesy, but in my opinion that makes it perfect for kids. The movie is so innocent, and so fun and very clean that it is definitely a safe movie to let your kids watch. These days even some rated G movies aren’t appropriate for little ears or eyes, but Super Buddies is clean and appropriate through and through. I LOVED this movie for this reason.
Super Buddies is a pretty funny movie. There were constantly funny one liners being thrown from the funny cast of characters. We had a lot of laughs throughout the film. There were also lots of action filled scenes as the puppies tried to save the day! I also love there are actors in the film you love and recognize from previous projects. How fun to see John Ratzenburger acting instead of just hearing him (he is a voice in every Pixar film) and some of your other favorite Disney Channel stars.
I would recommend Super Buddies to everyone. If you are an animal lover, a super hero lover and just want a good, clean family friendly movie, this is the one to watch! Remember you can enter to win a Disney movie prize pack which has 7 great Disney titles including this new Super Buddies movie! The giveaway ends Sept. 6 so don’t miss out!
