All parents want their children to be as healthy as possible, and one of the most important factors that determine physical health is exercise. The benefits of an active lifestyle have been well documented and it’s a good idea to start as early as possible when teaching children the importance of physical exercise. Timing is Everything
If you time activities right, the family will be more likely to be enthusiastic and get involved. Taking a walk after dinner is a good idea, because your family will all be together. Don’t leave it too late, or the kids will be too tired to want to come. Many children have a lot of pent up energy after sitting in a classroom all day, so when they get home from school you might want to suggest a game of football or basketball in the garden. If you live near a park, make sure you use it. This can be particularly practical if you don’t have a very large back garden for playing games in. If you have a family dog, your pet can be a great motivator for everyone to exercise. Everyone Should Join In
Inviting friends of your child can make physical activity a more inviting prospect. Instead of allowing your kids to take their friends upstairs to play on phones, laptops or video game equipment, suggest that they all go for a bike ride or to kick a ball around in the local park. Adults should set a good example by getting involved. If you children see you getting in from work and collapsing in front of the television, they will be more likely to copy this behaviour. Power-assisted motorized bicycles are also a good choice for people with health issues that prevent them from engaging in strenuous physical activities.
Play is Exercise
Don’t make the mistake of equating physical exercise solely with the gym or with punishing runs in the early morning. Exercise should be fun and playful, because this will encourage children to associate it with feeling good and want to do it again.
