Coriander is more known as Chinese parsley. It is an herb added to Mexican, Indian and Chinese cuisine. It is commonly used for diarrhea and other digestive disorders. It has long been used as an anti-microbial remedy in Latin America. Other features of the cilantro include its ability to calm the nerves. Adding cilantro to the diet would help people sleep better. It is a known fact that people who are having difficulties in sleeping are at risk of experiencing a lot of stress.

Garlic

Garlic has a very odorous smell thanks to its high sulphur content which has a lot of medicinal value. But wait, there’s more. Garlic is not just your ordinary spice that would make your food taste real good. It has shown that it has been perfect against bacteria and a great anti-inflammatory remedy thanks to the numerous compounds. Some cultures use garlic as an antihypertensive. It is able to relieve people with high blood pressure which may be associated with stress.

Oregano

Oregano is one of the most common herbs that people use to make their dishes smell and taste better. Yet, there are other uses of the good old oregano, not just for cooking. It seems that the oil derived from oregano is beneficial for people suffering from anxiety. Oregano has this chemical called carvacol which is a skin sensitizer that would activate channels in the body that is sensitive to warmth. The sensations of warmth in certain parts of the body have the ability to modify the circuitry of the brain. In turn, the warmth generated is influencing serotonin-receptive neurons which play an important role in alleviating stress and anxiety.

Turmeric

Turmeric is a special spice that has a host of health benefits for the body. It is able to help digestion and maintain a healthy-looking skin. It is good to lower the levels of bad cholesterol in the body and promotes healthy blood and liver functions. It is also a known adaptogen. An adaptogen is anything that adjusts the imbalances in the body naturally. As an adaptogen, turmeric is great in alleviating symptoms of stress and anxiety while providing optimal immune system support.

Basil

Studies show that basil is an excellent adaptogen that helps calm the mind and alleviate the symptoms of stress. It can be used to elevate the mood and has been used as a meditation aid.

Parsley

Parsley is rich in anti-oxidants vitamin C and E. It helps the body together with other nutrients such as folic acid and iron to help build better blood health. A cup of parsley contains a lot of magnesium which is helpful to give people a good night’s rest. People who are having problems in sleeping often get too much stress. It is also a significant source of fiber.

Now I know why kitchen gardens were so popular and necessary in earlier times. Not only did the mistress of the house have ready ingredients for her meals, but a mini-pharmacy waiting to help her tend to her family. After reading this, I will be looking at my spice rack in a whole new way.
