5 Ways To Keep Bed Bugs Away While Traveling

November 28, 2018 By Stefanie

Are you planning a trip and looking for ways to travel safe, free of bed bugs, which might take a liking to your luggage? Identifying bed bugs generally requires calling a professional local exterminator such as Wisconsin pest control. A specialized pest control firm will make use of standard procedures to treat bed-bug infestation safely and efficiently. You can hire the services of a licensed exterminator to get rid of such pests from your home or you can have them inspect your luggage including clothing before you head off to your holiday destination to make sure you are not taking pests with you. Here are some tips to reduce the risk of picking up bed-bugs during your journey.

Tips & Mitigation Advice

Do Not Keep Your Clothes On The Bed

Do not keep your clothes and luggage directly on the bed, especially when you are staying at a hotel or guesthouse. Normally, bedding in such places is infested with bugs, which can move onto your apparels and other luggage items if placed near.

Use A Metallic Rack

It is a good idea to make use of metallic supports while carrying your luggage around during the trip. Use a metal luggage rack to prevent bugs from climbing inside. These racks are excellent for storing your luggage bag and keeping your suitcase free from pests. Make sure you place the rack away from the bed and furniture, carefully positioning it away from the walls or cabinets.

Make Use Of Plastic Bags

Another good way of keeping your luggage safe from bugs is to make use of small plastic containers and bags to store your clothes, shoes and travel accessories. Keep your apparels in clean bags; this will also ensure bed bugs do not get into your house once you return from the trip. Note that these pests can hide in small accessories like non-metallic personal belongings, books, cosmetic kits, and cloth toiletry kits.

Use Protective Cover For Your Suitcase

Bed bugs are not only present in hotel rooms but in fact transfer through air travel, train rides, hitching rides, bus seats, and rental cars. It is important to keep your suitcase in a protective cover to prevent these pests from climbing in. Make sure you always travel with your items placed inside clean bags and your suitcase inside a travel cover.

Inspect Your Suitcase & Luggage

Take care to keep an eye on your luggage as you move into a hotel for an overnight stay or when you hitch a ride to your next destination. Clean your suitcase thoroughly before departure and use a vacuum to clear away any dirt or dust particles. The more attention you pay to cleaning, the lower are the chances to carry bed bugs inside your suitcase or luggage. You can also make use of a top-quality garment hand steamer to steam your clothing on the trip. This will ensure that your luggage stays clean by killing any larvae or bugs that might have climbed inside during the trip. Use hot water to wash all your clothes once you return from the trip, so the pests do not climb into your wardrobe.

I’ve also heard of adding food grade diatomatous earth to grains. It is edible and won’t add any flavor to your food. I haven’t tried it. I just store all my grains in gamma lid sealed 5 gallon containers. I didn’t know that pantry moths ate wool clothing, how aweful!fayetteville exterminator
