4 Tips for Holiday Travel as a Family

Traveling can be a wonderful experience for everyone involved, but if you aren’t careful, it can go downhill pretty quickly—especially when you have any of the following involved: babies, pets, teenagers, parents, and in-laws. Okay, so there’s a chance that describes every family trip (even more reason to read this article!). A potent combination of close quarters and long hours may lead to stress and conflict between even the closest of families. 

However, this doesn’t mean you should avoid stepping into the outside world with your loved ones. With a bit of planning and a can-do attitude, you can make your next trip great. No matter where you’re headed this year, here are four tips to making your family holiday trip run as smoothly as possible. 

#1 Pick a Place with Activities for the Whole Family

Sorry to break it to you, but your 3-year-old isn’t going to get much out of the beautiful architecture of Florence, Italy (your teenager probably won’t, either). Selecting the right locale to visit is the first step you need to take to ensure everyone will have a great time.

There are plenty of places that can provide fun for each member of your family. For example, a trip to Mexico can include beach fun at Playa del Carmen and a visit to the ruins of Tulum for the history lover in the family. Just make sure to keep everyone (especially the kids) in mind when you research the attractions at this year’s destination.

#2 Start the Trip Before You Travel

You don’t have to be at your destination to start immersing yourself in its culture. Consider watching a movie or reading a book set in that location! Pick something with a fun narrative (as in, not a dry documentary or a history book). 

Your kid has enough homework already—don’t assign them anything else.

It can be a lot of fun to go somewhere mentioned in a story. You can even go on a tour based on the book or movie you enjoyed as a family. Reading about a place or seeing it in a movie can make visiting it feel like a magical journey.

 

#3 Pack for Success

Figuring out what to bring is one of the most stressful parts of travel. Every family is unique, but some things are universal. Beyond the obvious things like clothes and toiletries, think about packing:

  • A white-noise machine – These little guys can be a lifesaver if you’re staying somewhere noisy. A well-rested family is a happy family.

 

  • Card games – Whenever you have some downtime, whip out a deck of cards to avoid boredom.

 

  • Reusable water bottles – Avoid spending a ton of extra dough by carrying a reusable bottle instead of buying a plastic one every time someone gets thirsty.

 

  • A guidebook – Yes, a physical book. Having access to information that isn’t dependent on your phone’s battery or data plan is a good idea.

Also, consider including some energizing and filling snacks for the family to avoid low blood sugar meltdowns. Similarly, if you are traveling with a canine companion, bringing some CBD oil for dogs will help keep them calm during long hours on the road or in the sky. Making sure everyone is chill and well-fed will really help the trip go smoothly.

 

#4 Outsource the Planning

There is no shame in getting some help with setting your travel itinerary. Believe it or not, travel agents still exist and would be happy to help you plan a vacation! It’s literally their job to provide advice on trip planning, so take advantage of that.

Plenty of companies also offer customizable itineraries for families, which can be a fantastic way to experience a place. You can take a load off knowing someone else has decided what you will be doing every day. Plus, if the trip sucks, you can blame it on someone else other than yourself (although the same can’t be said about who your in-laws point a judgmental finger at). 

 

Get to Know the World… and Each Other

Experiencing a different culture than your own is one of life’s great joys. It’s also a wonderful opportunity to bond with your family as you spend time together. So, go out there and become immersed in another world. Just make sure you don’t forget the snacks! Please don’t forget the snacks.
