I was talking to my friend, Rose, on Friday and she mentioned that she volunteers at a Horse Rescue. My daughters absolutely LOVE horses, but have never really had the opportunity to be around them. I asked if she would mind us tagging along with her and off we went! I had no idea there was a place like this in our area! It is called Hope in the Valley: Equine Rescue and Sanctuary- click here for the website.
Rose’s kids were so sweet and patient with my girls- I was really impressed! They showed my girls where and how to pet, brush, feed, etc and my girls loved every second of it! They aren’t ready to be in the main pen with all of the horses, but they are comfortable with one or two of them.
Our friend Amanda showed up (she is also my oldest daughter’s piano teacher) and she also helped the girls learn horse etiquette so they would be comfortable and helpful. I didn’t expect my girls to be so ready to work and help! It was a very pleasant surprise!
These horses have either been relinquished by owners who can no longer take care of them or they have been confiscated by the sheriff because of abuse or neglect. This horse came to HITVERAS just the night before; you can see she is emaciated. She was the sweetest, gentlest horse so she was a great horse for my kiddos to brush and feed.
At the end of the evening, Rose said, “Hey girls! Do you want to help scoop the poop?!” And my girl’s were surprisingly excited to do it! They actually jumped for joy…
At our school, they have a few hours of service to perform, so volunteering here is going to be a great way for them to get service hours! We learned so much on our first visit, and we can’t wait to go back again! Thanks to Rose and her family for letting us tag along and showing us the ropes! It was a dream come true for them to be so close to their favorite animals and a dream come true for me to see them do real some hard work! Hooray for volunteering!
