Two-buck Christmas Decor!

November 26, 2014 By Marybeth

I love crafts!  I always try to use thing I have around the house to create something new to add to my holiday decor!  I recently painted a table in my living room and I am trying to add accent colors around the room.  As I was visiting the dollar tree I came across these lovely Christmas tree ornaments. I immediately had a plan for removing my not so favorite pieces and making it into something that would fit my style and room decor!  This project is not only cheap but it is quick too!  Two of my favorite qualities in a project!!

Materials Needed:

2 sets of tree ornaments (found at the dollar tree)- cost $2 but you are really only using $1.50 worth of the ornaments since they are in 2 packs!

piece of wood (I used a piece of hobby wood found at home depot/ lowes) mine was 8 inches long by 2 inches wide – I had this lying around so for me it was free but I’m pretty sure if you got a full size piece and cut it you would be dishing out about .50.

wire cutters

pencil

hammer

tape measure – i used my grandfathers old one-totally old school I love it!  See picture below!

small nail

paint/ stain (optional)  I went back and forth but I kindof like the natural wood look

Glue (optional) if you can’t get your trees to stay or you are worried about them tilting then put a little clue in the holes before you stick them in (E6000 works great!)

Step 1: Cut the extra pieces off of your ornaments using wire cutters.  I took off the top look and both the big and small bottom loops- leaving just the little tree trunk.

Step 2: Next measure your wood and mark the places you want the tree trunks to be (aka the little wire piece at the bottom).  I put one of mine right in the middle of my 8 inch board and the other two exactly 3 inches on either side.  Mark em up with your pencil.

Step 3: Place your small nail (about the width of the little wire trunk) on your marks and hammer it in to each mark.  Note! You don’t want to go all the way through maybe 1/2 to 3/4 through your wood.

Step 4: Place your trees in their spots.  You might need to use the nail to do a little digging and widen your hole.  Also the wire on your trees can be fixed and adjusted to make them look fuller (kindof like my artificial christmas tree- same idea!

Step 5:  Put it somewhere and show it off to everyone who walks in your home.  Or make a couple more or a longer one depending on your decor desires.

Ideas: Use these as centerpieces at christmas dinner

Put a single in each of your windows

Use a bigger piece of wood and use them as stocking holders

So Many Options!!

Here it is on my windowsill.  I might just need to make another one!!

How cute and creative! Next time I’m at the Dollar store I’m going to keep a look out for those Christmas tree ornaments. Thanks for sharing.
