Transitioning to a Memory Foam Mattress

For the past 30 years I have slept on a tradition spring coil mattress. For the past almost 12 years I’ve had the SAME mattress (I know this is horrible!) Did you know the life span of a mattress is about 8 years? (Though I think memory foam has a longer life span, perhaps)  You need to replace them every 8 years, so don’t follow my example. If your time is up on your mattress then let’s talk about the memory foam mattress option.

First of all Linenspa.com has some awesome prices on bedding and mattresses! They currently have a mattress sale going on, BUT if you use discount code MAKINGMOM20 you will get an even BIGGER discount on top of the sale! Look at that deal! Stacking a sale with a coupon code is a smart shopper move!

LinenSpa.com sent me the 12 inch Memory Foam mattress by Lucid. This 12″ mattress has a medium feel. The three memory foam layers give the comfort and support needed for a good night’s rest. It has 25-year warranty and free shipping. When you first get a memory foam mattress it will arrive vacuum sealed and rolled. Once you remove the packaging it may take up to 48 hours to decompress and reach its full size. Also, there is a movement barrier so you don’t feel your partners movements throughout the night. It’s crazy, but it’s true! It may also have an odor which is completely safe and won’t stay long. Mine didn’t have an odor, but fair warning just in case.

I love the 12 inches of mattress. That is thicker than our previous mattress so my bed is a tad higher than it used to be! Let me tell you something, I don’t want to discourage you, but it is a fact to be prepared for- it takes time getting used to a memory foam mattress. The first couple of nights I felt like I was sleeping on a brick wall. After two weeks I was finally adjusted and was used to it. The thing about a memory foam mattress is that at first feel it is kind of hard, but then you sink into the mattress. The foam absorbs your weight and disperses it evenly. It then contours to your body for a natural sleep. I find the mattress exceptionally comfortable when laying on my back flat. On my side I have learned to adjust to the mattress and I sleep slightly different. I have noticed that I don’t toss and turn as much as I used too.

I love that the mattress is already enclosed in a cover for protection. I was worried about that before the mattress arrived, after all I have children and I didn’t want them biting off pieces of the foam! haha But it is perfectly enclosed in a cover, and I also use a mattress pad on my bed for extra protection.

Another fantastic thing about a memory foam mattress is that it isn’t going to develop a  divot- you know saggy mattresses. Since this mattress is made from memory foam it always returns to its original shape. I had a reader ask about a memory foam mattress for heavier people. The advice given from the mattress expert was that for heavier people they may want to try the 14 or 16 inch mattress as it will feel softer. The 10 and 12 inch mattresses will work but might feel more firm. They definitely need to stay away from 6 or 8 inches.

One interesting thing I learned while researching the mattresses and talking to my friends and family about it is that a lot of them have already made the transition to memory foam. They told me that it would take a little getting used to but that they now love it! I had no idea so many people I knew already were sleeping on memory foam.

I love higher (thicker) mattresses as well. Sound like a great mattress. Lord knows me and my honey are in need of a new one as ours is almost 13 years old now. Definitely going to check this mattress out more. Sounds just like one we need. 🙂

We’ve been on the same mattress for more years than I care to count. I’ll have to check out the memory foam mattresses at LinenSpa and see if they have something in our budget. Thanks for the discount code.

Easily the most well elaborated post I’ve read on the topic today. Who knew choosing a mattress for your bed could be so complicated haha. I was really dealing with a lot of conflicting opinions, and your blog solved plenty of them. I’m a bit unsure about whether to get Latex or Spring Latex though. I’ve heard some pretty bad stuff about spring mattresses and how misaligned springs can get you backaches. Is there some way to keep that in check? I heard that the misalignment is unavoidable but can be delayed with gentle use. Is there something more I should consider between choosing the two? I tried Memory Foam, but it just doesn’t do it for me.

Have you found the mattress has lost some of its “firmness” now you’ve had the mattress for a few years?

  16. Zach says

Memory mattresses are the best. Changed mine from latex to foam three years ago and am in love. Just curious though, are you still using the memory foam mattress up to now?

I’ve recently tested the Hyde & Sleep memory foam mattress, have you ever tried it?

It sounds very similar to the Lucid. I’m not sure they sell it in the US though, but could be an alternative for your UK readers.

It has a medium feel, two layers of memory foam and a 10 year warranty. The biggest downside though I would say is it sleeps ‘hot’ like most memory foam mattresses do.

Definitely one for you to try if you ever need a new mattresses though.

This is really a great helpful article. Memory foam mattress is invested by NASA first and it is most comfortable than other traditional mattresses. Thank you very much for this valuable article.

Are there not ways to still be using a mattress for a long time without changing it? Maybe have it washed and cleaned? There are companies that offer a long year of warranty because it is of high quality. But the dust that comes along with the number of years used is not controllable by the company. So I’ve wondered maybe there are services that can address this issue.
One feature I always have in my checklist for buying a mattress or pillow is a memory foam.

I agree with you…Linenspa mattresses are quite the real deal. I haven’t bought one yet my my friend who purchase one about 1.5 years ago swears this is the best mattress ever.
My current mattress isn’t even two years old but its already becoming increasingly uncomfortable. I can also see a dent forming. Might have to get myself a Linenspa soon.

The 25 year mattress warranty is fantastic! Do you know if they cover everything about the mattress and whether accidents also are covered? (for example a spill or if my dog bit off parts of the foam)
