Too Much Technology and Toddlers – What can Go Wrong

March 13, 2013 By Stefanie

boy and a girl playing video gameMobile phones, android tablets, laptop computers, game consoles. We cannot deny the fact that technology is moving so fast. Every month, the major players in the gadget industry release their new models. And to be able to make huge sales, they proactively market their new products using advertisements which cost thousands of dollars. These advertisements are so effective, a lot of toddlers would throw tantrums so they can get a new gadget for themselves. Since parents would naturally love to make their kids happy, they buy gadgets without having second thoughts.

Some parents would say that it’s good to expose young children to gadgets. After all, they need to keep up with this trend. In few years, schools would maximize android tablets. While you can’t eliminate old – school notebooks, schools would promote the use of more ‘modern’ notebooks.

Without a doubt, allowing your kids to use gadgets at an early age has its benefits. But you have to know its disadvantages too. That way, you can objectively evaluate if there is a need to buy their gadgets.

In this article, I will show you some disadvantages of exposing your kids to these so called ‘wonders of technology’.

Lesser time playing physical games. Remember when we were little kids? Our parents would allow us to play with the neighbor’s children. We would play ‘it’, we would run, we would skip rope and we would go home sweaty, and sometimes smelly. Now, the kids are more confined in our houses. They play cyber games and make cyber friends. There are less physical activities. No wonder that there are a lot of obese kids.

Lesser social interaction. Yes, they make cyber friends. But that’s nothing compared to REAL friends where they have to meet them in the flesh. Cyber friends are good. However, it is not personal. Your kids won’t be able to learn how to face different people because they are only used to chatting or video calling.

Exposure to ‘adult – content’ websites. Even if you download programs that block adult – content websites, there is still a possibility that your toddlers might be exposed to it. I mean, you can’t guarantee that your program can screen ALL these sites. There are some which can still pop – up from nowhere.

I personally don’t recommend that you allow your toddlers to have their own gadgets. They don’t need it. They could survive without it. Make their childhood more memorable by doing real things and visiting real places. I’m sure those are better than just lying around the couch with their tablets.

David Zielinski is a brilliant writer who just published his first good childrens book . It’s a wonderful story about the Misadventures of Fink the Mink. It’s an entertaining picture story book that will teach kids good social skills.

We have a family member who bought each of their wo year old twins their own Ipads for Christmas…my husband and I were appalled. Not only is it crazy to spend so much money on something that is most likely going to get broken…what ever happened to having a real book in your kids hands? What about playing out in the sandbox or with animals? I think this is just another way that we are straying too far from nature.

I agree with you: a lot can go wrong, and it’s more important for young children to play and interact with others. They need fresh air, exercise, and real people to play with!

I totally agree. Kids can get into all kind of trouble. The parents can’t know everything they’re into.

I think kids should get out and do some physical activities. Since weather is getting better, I should bring my little one to the playground.

I am totally with you! I’ve seen what too much technology has done to many kids – they’ve become social misfits in the real world.

I wish I could delay my kids’ access to gadgets, but it’s impossible. I feel they’re loosing a lot of ‘real life’ experiences, you know? I feel frustrated when trying to interact and they keep playing games on a tablet.
Here at home we try to put limits, but it’s not easy.

Good ideas. Technology has its advantages but also major disadvantages (for kids and adults too). Sometimes we need to go back to “Little House on the Prairie” days. 🙂

Hi, We originally wanted to renovate, but I’m just so worried that it’ll end up taking way longer and cost way more than we ever intended. Plus I think he would be planning on doing a lot of things himself, which if this house is anything to go by, means most of it will remain unfinished for months on end.

I have with tech in meetings, certainly using laptops or iPads to take notes etc during them is that unless recording the meeting is critical, I just won’t trust that they are not playing around with other apps rather than focusing on the purpose at hand. At least with pen and paper, if someone is doodling it is pretty obvious to all (a fact that, as a constant doodler, I am always very aware of). lisa

Most electronic devices created for kids have age-appropriate labels for parents. I usually try to buy things that are age-appropriate for my kids. I would say by age three or four, depending on your child’s development, that they could start experiencing certain electronic devices as long as there is a learning experience behind it.
