Tips for Updating your Family Picture Wall

February 27, 2021 By Stefanie

This post is sponsored by CanvasDiscount.com. All opinions are my own.

I’m not the best at interior decorating. When we moved into this houseĀ  I didn’t put anything on the walls for the first several years. One day I got sick of my house looking so “temporary” and asked a friend who has a knack for decorating to help me place so things on the walls with what I had on hand. We got the living room, kitchen and hallway all decorated and looking nice. My home finally felt like someone lived in it!

Up until this week I had left the family picture wall this friend helped me create years ago, mostly the same (I had updated single pictures of my kids so my toddler was included). Those pictures now were so outdated and most didn’t even include my toddler. Some of the pictures I loved but most needed to be updated, so with the help of CanvasDiscount.com I was able to update my wall and make it a bigger feature in my home. Follow along my journey to learn my tips for updating your wall and see how the new wall turned out.

Canvas Prints

I decided to combine a mixture of canvas prints and regular glossy photos with frames on my wall. The canvas prints really pop and draw your eye so I picked photos that I really wanted people to look at to be the canvas prints. A collage of my kids, a family picture and a picture with extended family.

Using CanvasDiscount.com to design my canvases was really fun and easy. I first edited the pictures in Picmonkey to brighten them and adjust colors. We had taken these pictures ourselves, so we weren’t using professional photos. *Next time I update to photo wall, we will get professional photos done first.*

On the Canvasdiscount.com website you pick what you want to do. I uploaded my photo and went through a couple different sizes seeing how the picture would look.

I previously had a photo collage of my kids on the wall from pictures taken last year. I didn’t want to get rid of that collage so I added the four pictures to a canvas collage making it pop on the wall. I love it!

Making this collage was easy with the CanvasDiscount.com program. They have a ton of templates to choose from and from there you can edit it, including adding text, background colors and more. It’s a simple drag and drop system so rearranging it all is easy.

Combine canvases and flat photos

I wanted to add some texture to the wall by having canvases and framed photos intermixed. I think it helps draw your eye from one photo to the next because there are different things to look at. I kept my frames consistent with color to keep it coordinating, but the shapes and sizes are different.

Shop the sales

Because adding canvases to your family wall is so awesome but can be pricey, shop the sales. Join the email list for CanvasDiscount.com because they have some great sales, pretty often. Buy the canvases on sale and then wait for the next sale for the next product you want. It’s not a race to get it done, so if you are trying to stay on budget, let it take a few months to get the right price for the right pictures.

If you want some framed pictures on your wall check out some clearance frames and at local stores, shop around for coupons or pay attention to the sales. You can also see if your local thrift stores have some frames you like, even if they already have a picture you don’t want in them. You can even buy frames you like, that aren’t the right color and paint them. The frame I used that looks like an arrow was naked wood. Since it was the right size for my wall, I spray painted it black to match the theme.

Use codeĀ MAKINGOFAMOM15 to get an additional 15 % off all already discounted CANVAS PRINTS as seen on the CanvasDiscount.com website.

Lay it out ahead of time

Using the pictures, frames, canvases, decor, etc you should lay it out and see how it fits together. If you don’t have all the photos or decor, cut out papers to the same size as those items and arrange that on the floor. Practicing on the ground before you need to put nails in the wall will save you a lot of time and headache. You can also opt for using command strips once you place the pictures on the wall as they aren’t permanent and you will be able to adjust as needed.

Add different shapes

My previous wall was was rectangular, which is fine. I like things to be basically symmetrical, but this time around I tried to control my need for everything to be squared off and add a little shape! Because I had a little extra space I also bought a metal “family” sign to add to the wall. Maybe next time I’m ready to update the wall I’ll be ready to be even more crazy and not so symmetrical!

I love the final version of my updated family picture wall. This time around we used the command strips since we are planning on painting this hallway soon. But until we get it painted I can enjoy my new family collage wall. I am so excited for it to look even better with a fresh, crisp, newly paint wall without scuffs and other holes in it! It’ll be so beautiful!

If you have more tips for making your family picture wall tell me in the comments. I’m always looking to improve and if there’s some little adjustments I can make to make it better then I want to do it when we paint the wall!

The collage is cute. But the traditional family pic is the best. It’s memorable. Thanks for the tips.
