My husband and I got our first car in 2002 right before we got married. We each had received several lectures from our parents about taking care of our car and making sure we treated it well so it would last. We have tried our best throughout the years to take car of that car and because of our efforts our 14 year old car is still going strong (we do have a newer car for the record!).
If you are in the market for a car I suggest shopping around. The internet is a great place to do research these days and help you see a wide variety of cars without having to drive all over the place. Next time we buy a car, we want to buy local so we can support a local Kansas City business. Honda of Tiffany Springs has a website to do your online research, and you can always head into the dealership for an up close and personal shopping experience.
I want to pass on some of our tips for helping to take care of your car and keep it going for as long as it possibly can. Here are some of the things we have done:
- Routine oil changes. Most stores that provide oil changes will recommend you getting your oil changed every 3000 miles. Depending on your car and it’s status, you can really wait until 5000 to get it done, but it NEEDS to get done!
- Properly inflated tires. Make sure you keep you tires filled to the proper psi. If your car doesn’t have an indicator light then perhaps you should consider checking them every once in a while. You could get in the habit of checking out your tires every time you fill up with gas.
- Drive with care. Avoid potholes (not by veering into another lane of traffic though, that could result in an accident) and other road hazards. Drive within the posted speed limit.
- Change the filters. When you take your car in for an oil change they may tell you when the filters need to be change. More than likely they will change the oil filter, but you can skip having them change the air filter. Save a little money by learning how to install your own air filter. Chances are it is easy peasy.
- Keep your lights working properly. Our 14 year old car doesn’t tell us if there is a light out anywhere on the car, so along with checking your tires when you get gas, try checking the lights. You will need a second person to help you check the brake lights.
- Rotate the tires. It is recommended that you rotate your tires every six months or every six thousand miles. Check out this chart.
There are, of course, countless more ways to keep your vehicles running smoothly and taking care of it so it will last as long as possible. These tips I have shared are what we personally do to keep up our vehicles. If you have more tips you would like to share, I would love to hear them! Leave your tips in the comments section.
