The Planetarium at Union Station – Kansas City

July 5, 2013 By Stefanie

Planetarium

As if Union Station wasn’t cool enough, there is a Planetarium on the bottom floor! Union Station has been very kind to my family and I and they provided us free tickets to the Planetarium. Last week after looking over the shows they have playing: Black Holes, One World One Sky: Big Bird’s Adventure, Dawn of the Space Age and Solar System Tour we decided what to see. My 4 year old is a little jumpy at times so we decided the safest bet was the see the Big Bird show!

We left our house early because we did not want to miss the show! We ended up being greeted with major traffic on the freeway and craziness at Union Station because of the Maker Faire (that post is to come!) so we had about 4 minutes until show time when we were parking out car. We ran to the Planetarium and hoped it wasn’t too late. There was a cute girl working and she said that we had made it in time! Hooray!

When you walk into the Planetarium it is breathtaking. I had never been in such a big Planetarium before it was amazing. The guests at the Planetarium were small because everyone else was attending Maker Faire, so that was perfect. The One World, One Sky: Big Bird’s Adventure was the perfect show for us. It lasted 30 minutes and featured our favorite friends from Sesame Street as well as one new one. The movie was amazing as it moved from talking about stars and constellations to the moon. The moral of the story was that no matter where you live in the world we are under the same sky and seeing the same stars. It was very cute and very fun. It was also very kid friendly as the movie often asked the kids for “help” so they enjoyed shouting out answers to Big Bird.

Another thing I loved about the Planetarium is that since the screen is so huge (it is a big dome above your head) it stays pretty light inside the theater. We just went to the movies at a regular theater and I couldn’t believe how dark it was (we obviously do not go very often). I liked that the Planetarium was light and I we could see each and other interact with each other during the show. Oh, and the seats were very comfortable! They slightly lay back so you can see a big portion of the dome. Overall it was a very nice experience! I’m hoping my hubby and I can go on a date later to see one of the space shows! Thank you Union Station for such a great experience!
