The Music and Sounds of TinkerBell and the Legend of the Neverbeast

March 5, 2015 By Stefanie

Music-Bleu
I have a very musical background. Music was important in my home. My Father was a professional musician (classical) for several years of his life. My Mother is a very good organ and piano player. All of their children were required to play an instrument. I took piano lessons for a little while when I was young but didn’t love it so I gave that up and picked up a violin. I played all through high school and on my own in college. I still dabble with it here and there. As a Mother I know the importance of music. Besides helping with a child’s math skills there are tons of studies to prove that music and learning an instrument makes a positive difference in a child’s life.

Music also makes a huge difference in film. The music in TinkerBell and the Legend of the Neverbeast is beautiful and creative. It sets the mood and helps guide the viewers feelings. It evokes emotion – grab your tissues, you will need it with this movie!

It was so much fun to be in a room with Bleu, who produced all the music for this film and wrote some of it, and listen to his methods and theory for music and sounds in TinkerBell and the Legend of the Neverbeast. It was so fun to have him demonstrate several of the instruments they used in the movie.

Bleu got involved in the film because the director, Steve Loter, is a huge fan of his music and so he invited him to write a song for the movie. That offer turned into a bigger project and Bleu taking over all the music on the film. Once Bleu realized he would be working with Disney and have this amazing opportunity he got to work to create a unique sound palette for this film.

They figured out the themes for the film. For example each character has a sound or feeling. Obviously the fairies would be  light and playful, where as sounds and music for Gruff might be dark, heavier and looming. For Gruff they ended up using pots that you would use outdoors for plants. They have a nice dissonance and made for some good tones for Gruff. I loved that they used regular pipes from the hardware store in the film as well.

I took a couple short videos of his demonstrations and him explaining some of the music while it was playing. Check it out.

An interesting fact is that Bleu created an instrument for this movie. This guitar looking instrument is really called a Dulcetar that takes two people to play. One fingers the notes and one uses a dulcimer hammer to tap the strings, kind of turning it into a percussion instrument. Of course it can also be strum like a guitar. If you watched the video above you will see him playing it.

This was one of my favorite interviews because it was hands on and so interesting. Bleu did an amazing job with the music in this movie! I’m so excited for you all to see this movie and appreciate the beauty of the music and sounds.

TinkerBell and the Legend of the Neverbeast is out on Blu-ray and digital download now!
