The Joys of Family Togetherness with Camping

January 21, 2013 By Stefanie

Going on a camping trip is exciting for an array of reasons. However, you might not have yet considered the ways in which camping can actually help to bring your family closer together again. How can this mission be accomplished?

Matching Outfits
You’ll really look like members of the same team when you purchase some matching clothes. This suggestion is likely a bit much for older children, but little ones will absolutely love how everyone looks, and they will love matching with one another. Even if you aren’t going for this idea, you can still spend time as a family shopping for supplies together.

No Modern Items
Make it a rule that no one is allowed to play games on the iPad or any other similar devices when you’re out camping. Of course, some modern conveniences, bathrooms for example, are quite practical and helpful when you are camping with a family. Aside from that though, require everyone to spend good old fashioned time together. You can play cards, or go for a hike when the first bursts of daylight come peeking out from behind the trees. Renting canoes, kayaks, or boats from BWCA outdoor outfitters is another example of a great way to spend time together.

Making and Eating Meals Together
Between work, school and all of the kids’ activities, it seems as though no one has time to eat together, let alone cook together, anymore. However, during the camping trip, you will seem to have all the time in the world to prepare ingredients and learn how to cook them over the fire. You might make some foods you love so much that you’re inspired to keep up with the practice when you return back home. Even if you do bring a little barbecue along to help out with some of the cooking, you should all still be able to enjoy doing this activity together.

Taking Advantage of All That’s Available
Your kids, especially teenagers, might be grumbling that there is nothing to do when on a camping trip. This certainly is not true, and everyone will find an activity that works well for him or her. From biking and biking to canoeing and fishing, the great outdoors presents a place of freedom from the race of everyday life and an avenue through which you and your family can become closer. Simply spending time out in nature together is enjoy to make you realize that this big world brought you together as a family unit for a particular reason.

When You Return Home
Be sure to bring your camera on this trip with you, and encourage the kids to make a scrapbook when you get back home. You can talk about all of the amazing memories you made on the trip and some of the most exciting activities in which you engaged. Do not let this trip fall out of mind, especially if you found that it was a real bonding experience for all of the family members. You want everyone to remember these days when they depended on each other, trusted each other and simply enjoyed time together as a family.

Nature has a special power over people, and maybe that’s because it’s one of the closet to God that individuals can ever be. When people spend time relaxing together with all of nature’s beautiful sights and sounds, they become more thankful for the love they share.

This is a great post – I think it’s certainly true that nature has a great restorative power over the individual which is magnified when shared in a group as a family. What better way to get away from it all? Although you may want to wait for better weather than we are currently experiencing!
