Talking to Brad Bird, the director of Tomorrowland, was pretty exciting. Brad has had some amazing experience that led up to him making Tomorrowland and including some great features on the upcoming Blu-ray combo.
One of the bonus features I think is pretty interesting is the Production Diary which is some unique footage from the vantage point of the director. Using just a cell phone, because cell phone cameras are getting pretty good, he filmed things from his perspective. He said that
the director’s in a unique position on those films, a vantage point that’s good and sometimes it’s a confined space, and it’s literally the only space where you can see everything. So I just started shooting movies on there and a lot of them were used on the extra features.
Brad said that he had an incredibly talented team working with him on the sets and pros, obviously! The whole movie has some incredible designs and ideas. Brad said he was most looking forward to building the jetpack. He has always wanted one so he couldn’t wait to build one. He had to remember to only use things that young Frank would have on the farm to use in his design. Though the jetpack didn’t work the way it should in design, it was a plausible invention for a boy genius.
My favorite part of the interview was when we were asking Brad about what he would have the audience take away. After joking that the movie isn’t like broccoli and good for you, he stated
I hope if they come away from it with the idea that the future is not set. It’s in our hands; it’s fluid; it’s made every day by the actions of everyone and don’t resign yourself to the negative future; help build another one.
I really liked his answer and completely agree. I think we have experiences in life that change our outlook and attitudes and at those points we take a new direction with our future. I love that I can be in control of my future and I hope it continues to bring new incredible experiences!
