Last year when we started homeschooling I knew I was going to need to find some fun, hands on things to keep my kids engaged and interested in learning. We ended up being sent two science kits from Yellow Scope that were so perfect! We learned about DNA traits including learning about DNA codes to help us make silly monsters and capturing the DNA from a strawberry! We also learned about colors and chromatography.
My daughter had just finished learning about DNA in her high school Biology class and so she was really excited to take lead on the science kit with the kids and do the experiments with them. She taught them about DNA and the way to isolate it. They took a chunk of strawberry and were able to isolate its DNA and were so excited to come show me out in the garden. The Yellow Scope DNA Traits and Codes kit included everything we needed to get started (minus the strawberry). The fun thing is there are multiple experiments to do with this kit and so this can cover a whole unit with homeschool. Use multiple experiments throughout the time you have devoted to it and get library books and other resources to help supplement.
After the serious stuff you could talk about the things you learned about DNA traits to crate silly monsters.
Later on they learned about color and paper chromatography. They already knew the elementary information of colors and how they are blended to create knew ones but to watch the process happen before their eyes was fascinating!
Again, the kit included everything we needed to experiment with color including some food coloring and chromatography paper. After we tried the kit’s food coloring, we then got out some of our own neon colors because we were interested to see what colors would get pulled out on the chromatography paper. It was really cool!
This kit definitely held their interest for a really long time as they kept experimenting with different colors.
Each of the kits is pretty detailed with interesting information making it a perfect homeschool class, or fun hands on learning experiment outside of school. I think these would be awesome to go hand in hand with getting books from the library about the subjects to dive in deeper.
We had so much fun with our Yellow Scope science kits and think you will love them too. Click the links above to purchase your own!
