My Mom’s occupation was elementary school teacher. For that reason I often had to attend summer school, or do summer work so as to not “lose my skills”. At the time I was not happy about these “summer burdens” but now as a parent I see the wisdom. My daughter is going into second grade so for the past 2 summers I have bought workbooks for her to complete. This summer the workbook I bought focuses on math because I could see that math was getting harder and harder for her to do. Along with our library’s summer reading program to keep her reading/English skills current or improving, we have done several math workbook pages a day.
I recently learned about PowerMyLearning, a website that helps your children keep up their academic skills and avoid “Summer Slide”. According to PowerMyLearning:
Children who don’t engage in educational activities over the summer stand to lose an average of 2.6 months of academic growth.
We are not fan of regressing. We do not want her losing anything she learned last year, so it is important to keep up those skills. PowerMyLearning has games and activities for every school subject. When we were playing around on the website I saw there is Math, Language Arts, Social Studies, Science, Art & Music, Technology and World Languages! Once you register for free you are able to take part in all these fun educational games.
My daughter whines every day when I get out the math workbook, so this week instead of doing the workbook I have let her pick math games to play on PowerMyLearning. Her favorite game so far is “Cross the Swamp” where you help a monkey get across the swamp and get bananas by using addition and subtraction problems. One of the BEST tools PowerMyLearning uses is that you can adjust the games based on your child’s skills. I know what kind of math problems my daughter needs to work on so I choose that level of game for her. It is nice because I know she won’t be faced with a math problem that is way too hard for her current level.
PowerMyLearning is a great tool for keeping up skills during summer break and for supplementing during the school year. Now that I know about this website I plan to explore it even more, find other games in different subjects to help my daughter where she struggles and take full advantage of this free resource.

This is great. I’m going to try this with my son. I definitely think it is a good idea to keep learning through the summer too.
