I’ve never been very good at potty training. Working on potty training with my daughter was a disaster. I’m sure we did everything wrong with her. I was pretty sure we were going to scar her for life and she would never use the potty. Eventually, through a series of bribes, she finally figured it out and has successfully been using the potty for 4 years now!
My son, on the other hand, was a different story. This time around I was confident. I had learned with my daughter that kids will potty train on their own time frame. When they are ready it will happen. I was determined not to pressure him into it, so I anxiously waited for the cues. I was sure that he would ask to go to the potty sometimes or tell me he was wet and wanted to be change. All of these things are in potty training books and on advice websites, so surely every child eventually does them, right? NO! They don’t!
When my son was getting to be about 3 1/2 years old with no interest in the potty and perfectly content sitting in soiled pants, I became concerned. I started asking him about the potty – but not applying pressure. He always shrugged me off and wasn’t interested. As we were approaching his fourth birthday I was getting nervous, more out of my own embarrassment of having a 4 year old in diapers – who does that? The nightmare that was about to happen ended the embarrassment and started the fury! He refused to go potty on the toilet – for 9 months! After about 9 months of fighting and applying a lot of pressure nothing was working. He couldn’t be bribed, he couldn’t be threatened, nothing motivated him!
Finally one day, after cleaning a particularly disgusting diaper, I decided enough was enough and he was going to be potty trained. That day I put him in Pull-Ups®, told them they were underwear, made him carry a towel around with him so that where ever he sat he would be sitting on a towel in case of an “accident” (after all, underwear doesn’t catch your pee – see the trick?) and waited. He was going to do this! To my pleasant surprise, he decided not to pee in his pants and he went to the bathroom. Now children when they are first potty training need to go potty every 5 minutes because they don’t know they can hold it for a little bit. For the first few days we spent a lot of time in and out of the bathroom, but I didn’t care. SUCCESS! I had finally won the war! With the gender specific Pull-Ups® he was able to easily pull down his pants to use the potty and pull them back up again on his own. He really was a big kid!
I love the because there are tips for potty training as well as activities, ideas for celebrating and even !! My favorite thing on their website right now is the “Be a Big Kid at Night” check list. My son can go down the list to make sure he has done all his nightly activities like putting on pj’s, brushing teeth, going potty and washing hands. This will help remind him he needs to use the potty one last time before bed and will hopefully last him through the night. We have a night light in the bathroom in case he does need to get up at night so he can see where he is going. Right now my favorite product is Pull-Ups® for night time. That is where he needs the most help.
