This past weekend my family went to the newly opened Legoland in Kansas City for my son’s birthday. We hadn’t been there before and I didn’t know anyone who had so we were simply going off of knowledge obtained through their website. On their website you can see the map of all the activities and it looks like a fun place. There were a couple of rides, several play areas, Kansas City made up of legos and lots of building areas. The price was a little expensive in my opinion, but you could save a couple of dollars through buying the tickets on their website. After talking over all our options we decided to go for Legoland and $65 for my family of 4 we were off.
When we first arrived things seemed good. The building was decorated cute. When you first go up the elevator to get to legoland (which it turns out is 1 floor of a building…. TINY!) you first enter the “lego factory” where they show you the process of making legos. There are a couple of activities to participate in this part of legoland, but since everyone startshere it is crowded, in a somewhat small room and so it may not be worth it to wait around for these activities.
From that room you are funneled into a line for the first ride. This automatically sent up a red flag that we may not be able to ride this ride more than once, since the beginning of the line was off of the “factory tour.” This first ride is SO FUN! You get into the car that sits a maximum of 5 people and grab a laser gun. You are traveling through the forest and to the castle to save the princess! Your job is to use the laser gun to shoot the spiders, ogre’s, all the bad guys and anything else standing in our way! The ride keeps score so you can have some friendly competition within your family.
After this ride you then are led into a hallway where you can choose where you want to go. The funnel is over and you now have options. We went into the lego Kansas City. It was amazing. All the landmarks of Kansas City were represented including downtown, the stadiums and all. This exhibit is fun because it is interactive. There are several areas that have buttons to push and things to look at.
There is a second ride at legoland. This ride somewhat fun. You sit in pairs. Each person is in a chair with pedals. The ride spins in circles and the faster you pedal the higher your chair will go. It really was something of a workout, but the kids had fun.
There is a 4-D movie that lasts about 10 minutes. It was a very story with a couple of the 4-D features, which are wind and getting sprayed with water. My son refused to wear the glasses, but still liked the movie. I am usually not a fan of those kinds of movies, but it was cute.
There are several areas around legoland with big “pools” of sorts full of legos. There were plenty of areas to play and you could always play with as many legos as you wanted.
There was a GIANT play place, in which you must wear socks, that my daughter loved! She spent a lot of time in there finding all the fun activities inside. My son (who turned 3) was too young to venture in there by himself. So while my daughter played in there my husband and son built a lego car. There is a section to build lego cars and then there is a race track (that is really just a ramp) so you can race other people’s cars. That ramp help 5 racers, so you often had to wait your turn to race. There weren’t very many parents monitoring their children at this part of legoland, so it was a little chaotic trying to get a turn to race, because apparently other people don’t teach their children to take turns. When it was too crazy to race on the official track there were 2 steep ramps to run your cars on. People seemed to be less interested in those ramps, so my family was able to use them as much as they wanted.
Lego has a new product out called Friends which are basically girly legos, so there was a small section that had the friends legos with some tables, and karaoke.
There was a small lego station that had 4 tables that would shake so you could build a tower or a building and then set it to shake and see if it would with stand the shaking.
Written out it may seem like there were plenty of activities, but when you are there and your kids are running around, and don’t want to just sit and play with a tub of legos, the options are limited. My children (and honestly my husband and I also) wanted to ride the first ride over and over again. I wouldn’t say that the money would be worth it if you could ride that ride all you wanted, but I would have been less frustrated with the place. I don’t understand how they can charge you to get into the place and then limit what you can do inside. They especially shouldn’t limit the funnest thing to do in the whole place. As we were leaving, there was a computer to leave comments, of which I did. I left all my opinions and agreed to being contacted about it. So far I haven’t heard from anyone, but I hope they do contact me.
