LeapFrog’s Word Whammer

October 4, 2015 By Stefanie

As a LeapFrog Mom Ambassador, I was sent educational toys and materials to share as I see fit. All opinions are my own.

As a child I struggled a little with reading. It wasn’t my favorite activity so I tried to avoid it as I could. How I wish these amazing learning games that LeapFrog now has were around then. Luckily, my children are the recipients of such wonderful fun learning tools including this Word Whammer.

What is a Word Whammer? It reminds me of a “Bop It” with its turning and pushing arms. The Word Whammer is packed full of word and letter games.  This is an excellent toy for preschoolers or those in the early Kindergarten stage. It can help prepare them for kindergarten in so many ways. Keep in mind that kindergarten is no longer a time in which kids nap and play all day long. This first year of school is serious business.

Phonics Skills

The focus of the Word Whammer is to help your pre-kindergartner get their phonics skills moving. They will be able to build 100+ words while they use the LeapFrog Word Whammer. It teaches everything from letter names to letter sounds to word building. I’ve never met a parent that would say no to teaching their kid these concepts earlier in life to prepare them later for their kindergarten “career.”

It’s Interactive

The BEST part of the Word Whammer is that it’s interactive. You can twist, turn, spin, and tap for a fast reaction. I’m pretty sure literacy just became our best friend because the Word Whammer is super easy to use and understand.

I don’t think a parent should ever get too worried about their child’s literacy skills. I’ve learned that with special tools that LeapFrog offers, like the Word Whammer, everything will be okay. A few other tips you can keep in mind when working with your pre-kindergartner on literacy is to-

  • Start early- it’s never too early to start learning letters and numbers
  • Reiteration is key- no child learns their ABC’s the first time around. It will take several “rounds” for them to learn it.

We’ve experienced the Word Whammer firsthand and think you’ll love it. Come back and let me know what you think about it.
