Out of all the rooms in our homes, the children’s bedroom is arguably the most fun and satisfying one to decorate. Maybe it is because we love and want to provide the best for our children, that we put so much more thought into their room. There is also the fact that designing their room brings out the child in all of us. Now, we are not only talking about young children here; it may be that you have teenagers in your family. Whatever age your kids are, read on, and you may find some useful tips that will help to give them the bedroom of their dreams.
Before you embark on the design, think long and hard about what your child enjoys. You will, of course, already know this but have you noticed a toy that is played with more than the rest? Maybe the colour is part of the attraction and it is this colour that should play a large part of the scheme. The child’s interest will also help guide you. Maybe they have a passion for horses when they see them or maybe you have a little boy who is bedazzled by tractors. Imagine how a tractor bed will make his face light up.
Decorating
For the younger child, primary colours are the key to creating and exciting environment. As you are aware, the primary colours are red, yellow, and blue. The walls can be painted or wallpapered with a mixture of these colours. Don’t forget about the ceiling either. Where does it say that our ceilings have to be white? Try to think like a child, and it opens your mind up to many new possibilities. Take the central heating radiator, for example. It is plain and boring. How would it look id it was painted bright yellow? Stunning to a child. Perhaps you would choose to create a theme in the room by putting stickers on the walls after painting the background colour. Maybe the bedroom could be an undersea palace or a spaceship rocketing to mars. All of the stickers are available online to help you to create a theme.
If your child is a little older, he or she will probably prefer to have darker colours. Deep blue or purple are typical of the colours a teen would choose for themselves.
Wallpaper designed specifically with children in mind will often be the perfect solution for the walls. Now we can choose for them but it is far better to take your child shopping and buy them exactly what they want.
Don’t forget the window dressings in the room. If there are flowery curtains at the windows, throw them away and buy some modern window blinds instead. Blinds are available in just about every colour you can imagine, to match, or contrast, the colour of the bedroom.
Fabrics
Be bold with the fabrics in the room. If you are handy with a sewing machine you can create bed coverings, pillowcases and throws out of some bright material to make the room even more magical.
Furniture
The bed is at the heart of the bedroom and choosing the right one is all important. You will find different types of beds for sale on this website and many others online. The younger child may prefer a racing car bed or a horse drawn carriage for a little girl. Children that are a little older may love a captains style bed with lots of storage underneath. How about a bed with a sofa underneath so they can have friends round to play on the latest video games? There are amazing products to choose from these days. Younger children love to be enclosed by curtains around the bed so if you can fit a rail or construct a canopy to drape over the bed you will create another place that can be put to use by their imagination.
Children of any age appreciate a desk and chair. Whether it is a pink plastic one for a toddler or an office desk for the teenagers computer always try to fit a desk into your design.
Wardrobes give an opportunity to inject large blocks of colour to the room. There are plenty of wardrobes on sale that come in the primary colours you are using. They have ingenious storage solutions within them too so clothes, and toys can be catered for.
Encourage your children to read books by displaying them properly on bookshelves. The shelves can be bought new or, if you have some old ones, can be repainted.
Beanbags are enjoyed just as much now as they ever have been. Throw a few of these around the room, and your child can sleep whenever they need to without having to move away from the toys. Kids
Art
Use your children’s own artwork on the walls of the room. Picture frames are available online or in shops that will match the colour scheme and the child’s painting can be displayed in them. Using their own art is far more pleasing to a child than a generic print.
Have one wall for posters of their favourite tv character for the little ones, so the whole bedroom isn’t overtaken by them.
Carpets
A thick carpet will give the room warmth and can be overlaid by brightly coloured rugs. The rugs can be moved around and used for play by the kids.
Lights
There are some clever table lamp designs that project images around the bedroom. Alternatively, lamp shades with cutouts will give a similar effect. It is best if the main lighting in the room can be dimmed to create a calmer atmosphere for bedtime.
Toys
Many children’s toys are designed to be fun and educational at the same time. They come in attractive colours and can be used on bookcases, shelving, and furniture, to be an attractive addition to the overall design.
When all is said and done, you know your child better than anyone, and have a good idea of what they would like best. Many of the tips will apply to all children, however, so by covering the basics first and then embellishing them, there is little to go wrong. We all strive to give the kids the bedroom we never had; I hope you succeed.
