Winter can be a difficult time for a parent as children spend last time playing in the garden and more time indoors stuck for things to do. Instead of popping on their favourite DVD or computer game why not get creative with some fun arts and crafts? Not only will it keep them entertained for hours but it will also improve their learning skills and give them something to be proud of!
Christmas Crafts
Christmas is on the way and what better way to celebrate than by making your own Christmas cards with the little ones? If you keep your old Christmas cards from years gone by then make sure you recycle them by making brand new cards! You can help the children cut out the pictures or words from old cards and then glue them to a new piece of thick paper. Use some PVC glue to stick on glitter or even bits of tinsel for that extra sparkle!
If you want another Christmas craft idea then why not ask your children to help make decorations for the tree? You can use all sorts of materials from paper and card to clay or plasticine. You can use old decorations cut up for extra glitz and glam, or stick down some pictures of the family for a real personal touch
Create Your Own Calendar
After Christmas comes the New Year and a new year means a new calendar! Instead of spending money on a boring plain calendar hanging in your kitchen, why not make one with your children? There are plenty of free templates you can download for the months, or just use some plain thick paper with a ruler and pencil to mark out the days.
Once you have your calendar base it is time to get creative with the kids! Ask them what they would each like on their own calendar, whether it be pictures of kittens and puppies, pictures of the family or cut outs of their favourite celebrities. Gather together some old magazines or catalogues so that they can cut out their chosen pictures to stick onto the calendar. If you do not mind them cutting up family photos then bring out the photo album so that they can add these in too!
There should be a large space at the top for their favourite pictures and then they can stick on smaller pictures for their favourite days, family and friend’s birthdays, school holidays and so on!
These calendars are guaranteed to keep your kids busy for hours and will look fantastic hung on the wall afterwards.
There are plenty of ideas for icky sticky activities during the winter, especially if your kids are getting bored of being stuck indoors. A lot of these ideas involve recycling things you already own so shouldn’t cost the earth either! Just make sure you have a lot of glue and cellotape ready for your icky sticky fun!
