My favorite thing on the Chili’s menu is their Onion Strings. The last time we went to Chili’s I didn’t see it on the menu so commence my panicking! Luckily Pinterest exists and I was able to find a copy cat recipe from The Pioneer Woman.
Onion Strings
1 large onion
2 cups buttermilk
2 cups all purpose flour
1 tablespoon salt
1/4 tablespoon cayenne pepper
1 quart Canola oil
black pepper to taste
Directions
Thinly slice onion. Put onions in a dish and cover with buttermilk. Soak for a while (The Pioneer Woman recommends as hour, I usually just let them soak for a few minutes while the oil is heating and I’m getting ready)
Combine ingredients in bowl and set aside.
Heat Canola oil in pan to 375 (I don’t have an oil thermometer so I wait a few minutes and then sprinkle some of the flour mixture into the oil to see if it reacts)
Grab some onions out of buttercream and toss in flour mixture. Shake off excess and put into oil. Fry until golden brown. I don’t use enough oil for the onions to be completely submersed so I have to rotate them once one side is brown.
Place fried onions on a paper towel covered plate to help soak up the extra oil.
Repeat until all onions are done.
We eat ours dipped in ranch! YUMM!

I’ve never had these at Chili’s but can’t wait to try them at home anyway. I like how they don’t have to be the “perfect” onion rings too.
