DIY Roadway

November 14, 2014 By Stefanie

I received a product for review purposes. All opinions are my own.

My kids love tracks. Whether it’s a train table, a carpet car track, a plastic race track or a homemade roadway, my kids love it! When they came home from school and I told them our activity was going to be making a homemade DIY roadway they got very excited!

First, gather the supplies you need. We used a cardboard sheet, construction paper, Classic road series tape from Inroad Toys, and little town accessories like trees, buildings, road signs and buildings. You can buy these kind of accessories in a toy bundle on Amazon.

My husband drew out a plan of what he wanted the roadway to look like. He is an engineer and always needs a plan. Once it was drawn out, he and the kids got to work. First was the race track with parking spots for first, second and third place cards. Then the city roads. My daughter cut out the lake and glued it down. We used our city toys we weren’t using on our train table to build the city. We added trees, a boat for the lake, a fire station, police station, construction site and more. This little town is so cute, and so much fun.

Making a DIY roadway on a cardboard sheet makes for the perfect roadway. We own a rug car mat but it often gets wrinkled or folded. My son gets so upset when he is crawling on the rug driving his cars around the city and the mat starts getting wrinkled and crumpled. This cardboard roadway won’t do that. Plus, with all the city accessories they can move and rearrange everything to make it they way they want it that day. Clean up is as easy as tucking it against a wall in the play closet. Super fun and super easy!

Have you ever made a homemade toy for your kids?
