On June 26 (my birthday!) DreamWorks Animation will be debuting a new series on Netflix- Dragons: Race to the Edge. In honor of this exciting new show that my kids are really excited about we decided to have a little fun with it. DreamWorks and Netflix sent over a pretty fun press kit to promote the show including a replica of Hiccup’s map. From that map my idea struck to take my kids on a dragon hunt.
We started our dragon hunt by gathering toilet paper rolls to make binoculars. I’m sure at some point you have made homemade binoculars. It’s a pretty easy and straight forward process but here are the directions in case you need them.
- Gather supplies: toilet paper tubes (2 per binocular), glue, crayons, yarn or string and a hole punch.
- Let your kids decorate 2 of the toilet paper tubes to their liking.
- Put a straight line of glue down one side of one of the toilet paper tubes.
- Press together the two toilet paper tubes until glue is set.
- Once the glue is dry, punch a hole in the top of both sides of the binocular.
- String the yarn through the holes, long enough to go over the child’s head.
- DONE! Get dragon hunting!
We also purchased “Safari” vests from a local dollar store. My kids were so excited. We got out their stuffed dragon and put together this cute little dragon hunt for you:
Our dragon hunt was fun, but
In this new Netflix original series, Hiccup and Toothless lead the dragon riders soaring beyond the borders of Berk and discover the mysterious Dragon Eye, which is filled with ancient secrets that lead them to new lands filled with undiscovered dragons.
You need to have a stuffed dragon to have fun with these homemade binoculars. Go bird watching or place little plastic animals around and go on a safari.
Be sure to watch this season debut June 26 on Netflix!

I love the homemade binoculars! I have never made them before, but this would be fun to make with my nephew. He would be thrilled! We usually make-do with one tube…for eye-spy!!!

I’m a huge fan of hitting two birds with one stone, like having fun and recycling materials.
This looks like a fun activity kids of all ages will enjoy.
Plus I love How To Train Your Dragon so much I wanted to have a pet dragon like Toothless. 🙂
Thanks for joining the Summer Family Fun Linky I’m cohosting (for the first time).
