Cooking with #Netflix

We are HUGE Netflix fans at our house. My kids love to stream their favorite cartoons and shows on our TV. My husband and I love to catch up on sitcoms and discover fun new shows. While I nurse my baby I am able to watch my favorite shows (right now I’m watching Parenthood) on my smartphone. Now that I have a tablet I have  a fun and convenient way to watch my shows while cooking! I recently tried a new recipe from Chef Curtis Stone. It was easy enough that I could make the new dish while watching a show on Netlix… and then while we were eating it too.

The new recipe I tried was Honey-Glazed Ham Paninis. They are VERY good so let me share the recipe with you now:

Honey-Glazed Ham Paninis

Serves: 6

Prep Time: 25 minutes
Cook Time: 55 minutes
Make-Ahead: The chutney can be made up to 1 week before and kept covered in an airtight
container in the refrigerator.
Ingredients
Pear and Mustard Chutney:
1 cup apple cider vinegar
3/4 cup (packed) light brown sugar
1 small onion, finely chopped
1/4 cup coarse-grain mustard
Grated zest of 1 orange
4 Anjou pears, peeled, cored and coarsely chopped
Sliders:
1 large loaf focaccia (about 17 x 6 x 1 1/2 inches)
1 pound honey-glazed ham, cut into slices
8 ounces sliced Swiss cheese
3 ounces fresh baby spinach leaves (about 3 cups)
1 tablespoon butter, at room temperature
To make the chutney:
1. Combine the vinegar, brown sugar, onion, mustard, and orange zest in a heavy
saucepan, and bring to a boil over medium heat. Then reduce the heat and simmer for
about 20 minutes, or until the onions are tender and the liquid has thickened slightly.
2. Add the pears and continue simmering gently for about 30 minutes, or until the pears
soften and the liquid thickens some more. Let the chutney cool, and then keep it in the
refrigerator in an airtight container. (The chutney will keep for up to a week).
To make the panini: 
3. Position an oven rack 8-inches from the heat source and preheat the broiler. Cut the
bread in half horizontally and arrange the halves, cut side up, on 2 baking sheets. Place
the ham and cheese over one of the bread halves. Toast both bread halves under the
broiler for 2 minutes, or until the cheese melts and the uncovered bread is golden brown.
4. Scatter the spinach over the ham and cheese. Spoon the chutney over the spinach. Top
with the second bread half. Brush the top of the slider with butter and broil for 1 minute,
or until the top is crisp. Cut the slider into 12 pieces, and serve.

 

Watching Netflix while cooking, and occasionally during dinner time is a lot of fun! I’ve started thinking about Thanksgiving and all the preparation that goes into that. I’m thinking while I am spending ALL DAY in the kitchen the day before Thanksgiving and on Thanksgiving I’ll be streaming some shows. Thanksgiving Day is when I LOVE to watch Home Alone and welcome in the Christmas Season with that classic!

    Your panini look delicious and I imagine one could change the chutney by using apples for a slightly different flavor. We don’t use Netflix or streaming yet, but we are considering it.

    The name of this sandwich just makes my mouth water. I’ve never made a Panini myself but have tried a few. I’ll be eyeballing the Christmas ham for leftovers to start my recipe. I hope I can make it taste as good as it looks.

    This looks absolutely delicious! I will have to make this for my fiance only with turkey instead of ham. I think it’s wonderful you can watch your show while cooking! I usually can’t keep focused if watching a movie or show while cooking, but I do enjoy listening to music while preparing dinner. Multitasking seems to make cooking time fly by! Great post 🙂

    I don’t have Netflix so I wouldn’t know if it’s worth getting it, but from the way everyone is raving about, I guess it is. As for the recipe, I love focaccia bread, but I would have to replace the meat with a vegan alternative as I’m a vegetarian. And I honest to God don’t have a favorite holiday movie – I’m not much one for rewatching the same things, I’d rather spend my limited time here on Earth with watching something I haven’t seen yet.

    I have Netflix as well and I like to enjoy movies, the ones I’ve watched is The Land Before Time, The Rascals, Curious George Episodes and my all time favorite The 70’s Show. I would also like to try you’re recipe, everything looked so yummy !

    I love my NetFlix! My favorite Holiday Movies to watch on NetFlix are National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation and The Polar Express.

    Your dish looks good! I almost always have the tv on in the background when I cook. I’m usually listening to the news. I don’t know that I pay enough attention to watch a tv show!

    My family LOVES netflix! Can’t go wrong for $7.99 a month! I start watching series that I normally hadn’t started watching when they 1st launched on tv and just play catch-up till I am current with the live shows. I am currently watching sons of anarchy… I finally gave in b/c everyone else in my family watches it. I have 2 episodes left before I am current with this season 🙂

    These look amazing! I wish I could find time to work on a meal plan so I could fit fun stuff like this in, we are 30 miles from the nearest grocery store so I tend to just “wing” it most nights and fall back into my rut of same-old same-old. Yum!

    We just Netflix. So I have just started browsing to see what is offered. I have watched any Christmas movies yet. I just started watching Orange is the New Black. Great show. Thanks for the delicious recipe also!

    You know, I have Netflix and have a tablet, yet it never occurred to me to just do my show-watching while in the kitchen. Usually I just hit pause on the TV room, race to the kitchen, tend to some cooking, and race back. Not very efficient at all…

    Netflix is an awesome site for those times when TV just does not have anything on and you can catch up on shows during those times needed most such as cooking! Your food looks awesome!

    Oh my gosh this looks delicious! I myself watch Netflix CONSTANTLY and I actually just finished Parenthood! Such an adorable show, I loved it!

    My favorite Holiday shows to watch are generally It’s a Wonderful Life, The Christmas Story, The Santa Clause, and the 1964 Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer! I usually don’t watch them on Netflix though, we have all the DVDs and watch them all as a family!

    I’m always watching Netflix in between cooking (waiting for things to simmer, etc). I try not to watch it WHILE cooking unless I’m doing something that doesn’t require thinking… like peeling potatoes! Hehe!

    OMG…this looks delicious. i usually do not try out too many recipes online because I always have to alter time to my liking but this has everything I like. I am going to try it for lunch tomorrow. I do not have Netflix but I am still considering it.
