Children’s Oral Hygiene Tips

November 12, 2012 By Stefanie

The importance of childhood dental hygiene cannot be stressed enough as it lays the foundation for adult health, not just oral but general. As children’s oral structures develop and as they learn to care for their mouths, they may be prone to infections, tooth decay and orthodontic conditions.

Here are a few oral hygiene tips to keep your child healthy:

1. Make contact with a dentist early

The sooner an infant to taken to a dentist for their first oral health assessment, the better. A child’s
dental structures start to develop very early as their milk teeth start to form. Developmental
problems with oral structure may be identified early if the infant receives timely dental checks.
Learning how to care for a child’s unique oral health and hygiene needs means that a parent is
better equipped to teach their child personalised oral hygiene practice.

Throughout their development – including teething, formation of milk teeth and the loss of milk
teeth that are replaced by permanent dentition – children require dental care. Dentists are best
placed to advise on treating sore mouths or teething difficulties and may recommend appropriate
care for developmental disorders that may impact oral hygiene and health.

2. Engage your child in oral hygiene education

A child learns life habits early and by taking a child to the dentist they learn to value the importance
of oral hygiene and health. Dental hygienists not only help with oral cleaning but are there to teach
parents and children how best to meet their child’s oral health needs.

3. Develop an oral hygiene routine

By having an oral hygiene routine brushing teeth after meals, before sleep and on awaking; flossing
and mouth rinsing; children develop the habit of proper oral care. Doing so reduces risk of tooth
decay and gum disease by keeping sticky plaque and infection-causing bacteria at bay.

4. Use child-friendly dental products

There are a range of oral hygiene products on the market that are fun, full of flavours and there to
help a child not only clean their oral structures but enjoy the process of doing so. Making sure that a
child likes the dental products used is important so that oral hygiene is not disliked and neglected as
a result.

5. Have teeth sealed with dental sealant

Dentists may seal a child’s back teeth that may otherwise be prone to tooth decay. Dental sealant
is placed as a protective coating over the teeth to prevent plaque and tartar build up, and decay-
causing bacteria.

6. Attend regular dental check-ups

Attending regular dental check-ups ensures a child receives the oral care needed for optimal oral
hygiene and health. During check-ups dentists advise on needed dental treatment and how to meet
a child’s oral hygiene needs.

I go through all the tips and these are really helpful. It is very important to take care of the oral hygiene of the children. My kid loves sweet and I am scared of the cavities but I took him to the dental house once in a three month. It is a good practise making the kids brushing their teeth twice in a day and flossing.
