Child Proof your Bathroom

December 5, 2012 By Stefanie

There are many things to consider when designing a family bathroom. Although safety is the major concern, you shouldn’t have to compromise on style when it comes to designing your ideal interior. The perfect environment for any homeowner is arguably an ultimately relaxing yet practical space. Here we look at ways in which to create both aspects to ensure peace of mind whilst unwinding alone or bathing the kids.

Storage Solutions

Storage is a key element in any bathroom, although it serves many more benefits when children are concerned. As well as keeping unsightly accessories hidden away it’s also useful to keep hazardous items out of arms reach. Keeping clutter to a minimum will lessen the chance of accidents and ensure that the space is much easier to keep clean. Child proof locks can be purchased and fitted to your storage devices in order to keep small hands from being harmed by curiosity.

Preventing Fires

Although candles and incense are a luxurious feature to utilise within your bathroom, open flames obviously prove extremely dangerous to anyone using the space. Battery powered alternatives are great however and can be purchased in a variety of styles which blend naturally with your decor and emit subtle smells to enhance relaxation.

Tightening Fixtures

Ensure any fixtures such as large mirrors or wall hangings are secured tightly and are at no risk of falling off. Placing any belongings which add aesthetic characteristics to your bathroom such as potted plants or ornaments high up on shelves enables you to still create a stylish bathroom but also guarantee a safe environment.

Hot but Safe

Under floor heating has many benefits in a family bathroom, and massively reduces the risk of accidents. Radiators and heated towel rails can potentially burn young children if not covered or set at low temperatures. Having heat produced under foot means that the room is warmed quicker and the luxury of this creates a comfortably lavish feel. Plush rugs are a great way of trapping the warmth, adding character into your bathroom and creating a softer environment for children to utilise.

Bathroom furniture should also be carefully considered in order to enhance safety. A lot of modern furniture is designed with sharp, blunt corners to create a contemporary feel. Pointed edges obviously prove another concern for excitable kids. Choosing bathroom furniture which is more sleek and rounded however will not only look stylish, but prove less dangerous.
