Celebrating And Learning About Chinese New Year

February 6, 2013 By Stefanie

Teaching children about various traditions is important and with it coming up to Chinese New Year, it is a colourful and exciting thing to get them involved in. It is one of the most important traditional Chinese holiday dates and is also known as the Spring festival.

Chinese New Year is celebrated around the world and is centuries old. Chinese families will spend lots on decorations, food, clothing and presents to mark the special occasion. Families also give their house a thorough cleaning before the date to sweep away ill-fortune and make way for incoming good luck. The tradition of this holiday is to forget grudges and wish everybody peace and happiness for the New Year.

When it comes to children being taught at home or in school, they usually respond to something that is exciting and uses lots of colours. Chinese New Year would be really engaging and a great way of introducing a famous tradition that happens in another country. This year it is the year of the snake, so you could get children to create swirly snakes and cover the body in bright colours with words that they associate with the event.

Educational supplies should make learning fun; they don’t always have to be books that they read. Some items that instantly are recognisable with Chinese celebrations are lanterns, fans and parasols they also paint elaborate patterns as well as creating beautiful scrolls with text. You could display the Chinese alphabet and get each child to draw their name and paint it onto a scroll; you could then hang these up around the room.

Learning doesn’t always just have to be creative with pens and paper either; you could take the kids into the kitchen to get cooking! Chinese food is highly popular, and in the country they use a number of fresh vegetables and rice to create healthy dishes. You could purchase a wok set and help them prepare ingredients to create tasty traditional Chinese food.
