I had no idea that my local American Girl store (and all American Girl stores) had fun events for girls and their dolls until Visit Overland Park emailed me inviting my family to a special Royal event. My family was invited to visit the American Girl store in the Oak Park Mall in Overland Park, KS where my daughter could get her doll’s hair fixed in a special hair do for the Kansas City Royals baseball game later that evening!
When we arrived at the store each family member received a goody bag. Of course everyone was excited about that. I was nervous going into this event because my daughter doesn’t have an American Girl brand doll, her doll is a different brand. Honestly, I was feeling embarrassed about it, but the employees at the American Girl store were still very gracious with her doll. After signing a waiver for my daughter’s “cousin” doll to get her hair fixed we went and watched the salon.
This is the first time I’ve ever watched the salon and it was so darling! All the little chairs with dolls lined up ready to get their hair fixed. The special hair do for the game was pig tails tied with blue and white ribbons for the Royals. My daughter was so excited about the special pig tails and ribbons. Even now more than a week later those pig tails are still in “Pansy” the doll’s hair.
When it was time to load the bus the excitement was high. My daughter loves all things American Girl. She was so excited to be on the bus and watch the American Girl movie. The movie playing was “Grace Stirs Up Success.” There was a lot of traffic heading to Kauffman stadium for the game, but no matter, we were having fun on the bus.
This was a special day to head to the K because the “Big Slick” celebrity softball game was going on. This is a softball game for charity, benefitting Children’s Mercy Hospitals. It’s a big deal here in KC. We got there in time to see the end of the softball game and get situated for the baseball game. In Kansas City we have been having a heat wave, like a lot of the rest of the country so Kauffman stadium has been happily exchanging seats for free. Since our seats were in the sun we got them switched into the shade. That made everyone a lot happier about staying for the baseball game.
My boys followed the bus to Kauffman Stadium so that we could leave whenever my 3 year old was done. The rest of the families at the American Girl event stayed until the end saw beautiful fireworks, then went back to the store on the bus. We lasted until the bottom of the seventh inning before we called it quits.
The whole event was so much fun and perfectly organized. I’m definitely going to look into the other American Girl events that are going on. Check out your local American Girl store for event listings.
