5 Kid Friendly Ideas for Backyard Entertaining

Outdoor entertaining is a great idea for children. When an event is held outdoors, kids have plenty of room to run around and enjoy the fresh air. Keep these tips in mind the next time you plan a backyard party.

Safety Is Key

Safety is the most important factor to consider about any event, and you need to consider extra safety precautions when children are present. Before the party, take a walk around your backyard and carefully note any safety hazards. Your pool needs to be secure, and pets should be put away before the party begins. You should also make sure that there are no wasp’s nests or beehives present in your outdoor entertaining area.

Get Wet

One of the easiest and most fun ways to entertain children is by hosting a swimming party. If you already own an in-ground pool, make sure it is in good working order before your event. Visit a site like

Keep Toys Handy

Regardless of the type of event you are hosting, make sure that you have a wide variety of outdoor toys available for children. You do not have to go out and buy a lot of expensive items because you probably already have fun items in your garage. Balls, tennis rackets, water guns, bubbles and balloons can all provide hours of outdoor fun.

Plan a Kid-Friendly Menu

If you know that kids are going to be present at your event, be sure that your menu includes kid-friendly items. If you are hosting a large event, you can even consider having a separate buffet area for children.
Fun ideas for kids’ foods include fresh fruit kabobs, chicken strips, vegetables and dip and bite-sized cupcakes and brownies.

Have Plenty of Beverages Available

There is something about being outdoors in the fresh air that makes people thirsty. Ensure that you guests are comfortable and hydrated by having plenty of beverages available throughout your event.
Adults will appreciate delicious cocktails, but don’t forget about the kids! Lemonade, 100 percent fruit juice, and smoothies are all both kid-friendly and appealing.

You should also keep plenty of bottled water on hand for all of your party guests. If your event is held during the summer, it is a good idea to have chilled, refreshing drinks. Hot coffee and hot chocolate are a great choice for outdoor parties that are held during the cooler months of the year.

Thanks Stefanie, good tips! I have to say I don’t really need toys outdoor as the kids spend all their time in the pool anyway 🙂
