Previously we discussed my personal goals for the new year, now onto home and family goals.
- I want my house to always be prepared for a “pop in.” You know when a friend or someone just randomly shows up at your house without you knowing before hand that they are coming. In my previous life I have always been very embarrassed when anyone would pop in on me. I always have a sink full of dirty dishes and clean laundry piled on a chair “to be folded” apparently at some later date. No more of that! It is time to make sure everything has a place and to put it there when we are done with it. This is tricky since we just moved and still have boxes to unpack, but it’s time to make it happen!
- Stick to a budget. We first need to create a budget and once that is done we need to stick to it. We recently moved and have not yet had our first mortgage payment, so I’m feeling a little nervous between the new mortgage payment and all the utilities hoping everything will work out in the end. That is no way to live! I will not hope things work out, I am going to make them work. Did you know you can call the utility companies and ask them to give you an estimate of your bills? Well we will start with those numbers for now, and in a month when we have received bills we will have a better idea of how to budget.
- Meal planning. This goes along with stick to our budget. Most often in our household it is groceries that send us over the edge on our budget. We head to the store not realizing how starving we are and end up throwing in whatever looks good. Never ask your family “what should we have for dinner this week?” while standing in a grocery store. Have a family meeting, figure out a week or a month (however long a time period you can set up, and afford to shop for) of meals, list all the ingredients you need and THEN head to the store. I don’t know about you, but for me, meal planning is the worst! I hate it. I would be happy if someone else in the house would tell me everything we are going to have and then I’ll make. Done and done! So having a family meals planned mostly accomplishes that, plus the kids can then add their input and have some of their favorite meals thrown in the mix, as long as there is a balance of healthy food too! 🙂
These are my big three. If I can get in the habit of making the first three happen, I will add some more later.
Do you have some goals for your family? Or your home?
