Ultimate Blog Party 2012Johanna and I live about 3 hours away from each other so we don’t see each other too often! We did, however, just spend about 3 fun days together! It was a blast to have her and her girls here! My kids love playing with them and I loved playing with her!

While she was here we talked about Making of a Mom and our progress and how things are going. We are both very pleased with all of the progress we have been making. This website is now 3 months old!! We have expanded our content to include some awesome reviews of some great products and some super fun giveaways! We have met a lot of mom’s feeling like they are in the same boat as us and we are bonding with our readers! Thanks so much for all you participation!! All of your feedback is what makes blogging even more worth while!

While we were together we also came up with a fun giveaway, we made a fun recipe we will be sharing soon and Johanna made a very cute craft that is shortly coming to the blog!

Also, if you notice on the right sidebar we now have an awards section because Making of a Mom won an award! We won Editor’s Pick from Pocket Change! Get a Grip!

By Stefanie

Multiple times a week I do research on the internet on how I can improve this website. I’m searching for ways to increase my traffic, make it user friendly, ideas for great content, how to keep it organized and from getting too cluttered and a million other things. A lot of the time when I am doing these searches and start to find some of the answers I want, I start to panic and feel overwhelmed. How am I ever going to implement all of these tools? And then I tell myself to “get a grip.” In fact this morning I was pacing the kitchen telling myself “Get a grip Stefanie, you can do this!”

It is easy to get overwhelmed with a lot of new information. The cogs in my brain start turning a million times a minute and that leads up to the moment when I need to calm myself down. Everything cannot be accomplished right now, and results will not happen over night. I know these things in my head, but emotionally not so much! Here are a couple of tips I want to share with you (and write down to remember myself) for your “get a grip” moments!

  1. Write it down! Have a notebook handy (preferably one that is designated for your ideas, or one that contains important information so it won’t get easily lost) and write your ideas, or search results down! You may have a moment of inspiration on whatever project you are working on and it would benefit you greatly to write it down immediately rather than trying to remember it later! Also, I find once I write it down, my brain can slow down a little because I know I have the information on paper.
  2. Make a plan of action! Once you have it all written down perhaps you want to make a list of the items you want to work on. It always helps to have a plan in place for accomplishing tasks!
  3. Set small, attainable goals! Chances are if you have a bunch of plans and you’ve made a list of what you want to accomplish they are all pointing towards the big picture. Now it is time to take that big picture and break it down. The big picture is overwhelming, but little chunks of that pictures seem completely do-able. If you set little goals that lead to a major goal you will have an easier time accomplishing that goal and staying on task.
  4. Weigh your options. Just because you want something doesn’t mean you can actually have it. You have to weigh your options and figure out if what you want really is best. For example, there are a couple programs I would like to try on my website and I think they would really increase traffic and my stats, but for $147 it isn’t realistic for me right now. Perhaps it would be wise to try other options, or keep that idea stored away until a more reasonable time.
  5. Lastly, reward yourself! When you have done a good job and accomplished one of your smaller goals, make sure to reward yourself. That doesn’t mean go buy a car because you hit 1000 visitors in a day, you should pick a reward that is proportionate to your goal. So if your goal was that you hit 1000 visitors in a day perhaps you reward yourself with a new template, or finally get that customize blog button you’ve been wanting. Some rewards for small goals and larger rewards for larger goals. If you don’t feel like you need a reward because attaining the goal is reward enough, more power to you!

After all the information I gathered this morning, it is now time to implement my strategy. I am going to go make a plan of action with some small goals from the information I gathered. This all seems so familiar from talking about goals earlier this year. I’m excited for you to see some of the things I will be implementing into the blog in the near future!

1 Sale a Day

By Stefanie

April 4, 2012

OK I have found a new favorite site. A couple weeks ago someone posted a jewelery daily deal on their facebook page for a necklace that was pretty. I had been looking for a similar necklace and this one was on super sale through 1saleaday.com. I ordered it and it came in the mail a few weeks later. It is such a pretty necklace and I got it for so cheap that I now check this site all the time.  So now when I stumbled across some awesome deals I’m going to share them with you. There is a link to 1saleaday.com down in the ad square on the right sidebar which will take you to the site whenever you want to check the daily deals, and sometimes they have flash deals that last from a few minutes to a few hours, right now under the jewelery tab they are having flash deals lasting 20 minutes each!. They have daily deals for families, jewelry, electronics, main deals and watches. So many cool deals. You can just go to the site and browse through the deals that are happening. It is a fun addiction because it changes every day! Enjoy shopping with this new deal site!

Blogging is Therapeutic

By Stefanie

January 11, 2012

There are times when I feel like I am going crazy at home! My patience is thin, and kids are misbehaving and I think I will lose it!! Having this blog, and talking to other people about this blog has really turned out to be therapeutic. I have talked to several friends about the blog, and their response has usually been “I totally have felt that way too!” I love having my feeling validated by others and knowing I’m not alone!

It has also been fun to take these situation where I feel like I will lose it and think about how to turn them into a blog post. That has helped my reaction be less severe than it previously would have been. It has helped me take a step back and think more calm thoughts. So far this journey to “feeling like a real mom” has really made progress by thinking of these situations in terms of blog posts.

You know how sometimes you just want to talk about things, and even after you have told one person, you still feel like you need to talk it out more? Blogging completely fulfills these feelings for me. I do talk things out with my husband, but then I can type up a blog post and talk about it with all of you and I feel like I am getting to talk it out with tons of people! It is fantastic!

Perhaps you need to start a blog. If you have ever felt this way, or maybe you don’t realize you feel this way, but blogging is awesome! It is a fun past time. It is fun to express myself in a different way. Perhaps I would word a situation differently than I would type it. This is really clearing my mind.

At night I am unable to turn my brain off most night. I toss and turn because I am thinking about everything that happened that day, all I wanted to get done and didn’t get done and new ideas I have. Since starting the blog I have been sleeping a lot better. When I have a post idea if I have time, I go to the computer and write it right then. If it is the middle or the night, or I don’t have time, I write the “title” and maybe a point or two for discussion, but then it is out of my mind. It’s awesome!

I have had several blogspot blogs before, but they always seemed to die before they even lived. This time around I bought a domain on HostGator, loaded a wordpress theme and found some helpful plugins. HostGator was by far the best deal around, plus their customer service has been incredible thus far, they are geniuses (as far as my opinion goes)! This small investment has helped motivate me to keep it up. It has also been fun for my husband to do a little bit with the blog set up and figure out some of those things for me. He loves to fiddle with websites, so this has given him something to work on and it has been fun to work together on this project.

Do you think starting a blog would be a fun project for you? Or do you already have a blog? Share!!

Happy New Year! Let’s Set Goals – Part 1

By Stefanie

January 7, 2012

Happy New Year! I know this is only a couple of days late, but hey, that’s the way I roll. With the new year comes resolutions. I am not going to make resolutions this year because I will probably fail. As blog master John Chow puts it, “I personally do not believe in making new year’s resolutions because they’re too easy to break. I like to make clearly defined goals and then create a plan to get it.”

So with this new year comes a new set of goals. Some goals are personal to improve myself and my small business, others are goals for my husband and I to achieve together and the rest are for improvements on home and family.

I want to share a few of my goals with you so that I am then held accountable. I can’t sweep them under the table and pretend they didn’t exist because people know about them, therefore they exist!

First a few of my personal goals:

  1. Spend more quality time with my children. You’re probably thinking “hey lady you are already failing, stop blogging and go be with your kids!” Well it is nap time, so I’m free to spend it the way I want. I plan to be very consistent with this blog, but spend time on it when it is “my time” and not invade on the kids’ time.
  2. I’m with a large number of people, I am sure, in wanting to eat more healthy food, exercise and lose weight. I always want this, not just at the beginning of each year, but always. This year is different though, a few weeks ago I found out my brother-in-law is engaged and instead of being chubby in the immortal wedding photos, it’s time to lose a few pounds. I have until June! This goal is a bonus because it ends in June (not that I want to go back to old ways in June, but I will no longer have the stress of photos on my shoulders.) In John Chow fashion I need to get more specific, so the goal will be 10-15 pounds by June! PLEASE help me, any support, advise or words of encouragement along the way would be fantastic. If you also have this goal, let me know in the comment section, I would love to encourage you also!
  3. Grow this blog. I will be regularly updating it and I want it to grow. I want to have friends in the blogging community so we can support each other and share our ideas. You can’t have too many friends.

I won’t bore you with the things My husband and I plan to work on together.

Tomorrow I will share my home and family goals and perhaps we have some of the same goals!

What are some of your personal goals for the new year?

Update: Here is the link to my Goals Part 2.
