Happy PI Day!

I know that PI day is a nerd holiday but hey! I’m married to an engineer so I hear a lot of nerd things! HA! Why is today PI day you ask? Because today’s date is 3-14 and the numerical value of PI is 3.14…. blah blah and on! :)

Ironically, besides it being PI day I am on a quest to make a deliciously looking and tasting pie! I have never made a pie before (some of you may be shocked, and some of you may be thinking “what’s the need to make pie when there is a local bakery where you can buy one at?”) I tend to agree with the latter on that. The bakery can make a delicious pie and it’s much easier than me making it! BUT for a church party I have signed up to bring a pie, and I would like to bring a pie that I have made. So in an effort to learn here is my first attempt:

The pie recipe I used for this Chocolate Creme Pie can be found at Southernfood.about.com (yeah probably not the best place to find a recipe, you can go check out the recipe by following my link. The pie didn’t taste good enough for me to go through the effort of typing it out here.) I chose this one because it looked easy enough. I used a store bought cookie crumb crust, so I just followed the recipe for the filling. I didn’t have a tub of whipped cream so I used aerosol whipped creme. It looked pretty cute with the chocolate chips sprinkled on top, but I think chocolate curls would look better. Here is a tip I learned: DO NOT use the aerosol whipped cream directly on the chocolate filling. After a few minutes of it being on the pie filling it started to melt, and yes it was in the fridge melting, weird I know! Next time besides getting a new filling recipe, I will get a tub of whipped cream to spread on top and get some chocolate aerosol whipped cream to make little dollops on top. Now to figure out chocolate curls, any suggestions? And do you have a yummy chocolate cream pie recipe to share? I will be following up this post with my next pie, so stay tuned!
