When I was in living in Kansas I became aware of couponing. The site Coupon Mom was exploding and shortly after the TLC show Extreme Couponing took off! Whenever I did research about coupons for my grocery stores in Kansas, besides manufacturer coupons, there weren’t many coupons for me to use (so I thought back then) because I didn’t have the particular store websites (like Coupon Mom) were telling me to use. I made a promise to myself that when we moved to “civilization,” as I like to refer to Kansas City, that I would get started couponing. This will also help me with my goal of sticking to the budget! This has been a slow going process for me.
As a beginner I had no idea how hard couponing really was. There are several couponing blogs I follow such as Budget Saving Mom who helps with beginners and sends a very informative newsletter.
In an effort to save money I have started paying close attention to the store circulars that come out on Tuesday. In Kansas we didn’t get the circulars, so I already feel a step ahead of where I was. I find myself every week making a list of what items I want that are on sale and then making a list of all the stores and what I want from each store. The hard part about this that I have discovered is that you really need to track the prices. For example, one week there was a coupon for a dozen large eggs for $1.27 and everyone that I saw at the store that week had eggs in their basket. Now I didn’t get carried away just because there was a coupon, I knew that wasn’t the best deal on eggs. I was right, the very next week a different store had eggs on sale for .99!! Now that’s what I’m talking about!!
I also write down the price of the item from the circular so that I know I am getting the right deal. There have been several occasions when I wrote down the deal I want, but then have been unable to find it in the store. Once I have my list, I go to the computer and search for coupons on the items I am going to buy. In my opinion it does no good to get coupons for extra items I wasn’t planning on already purchasing, that is just spending extra money, even if you do have a coupon. So I stick to my list!
Couponing is a journey, not a destination. It requires a lot of writing and tracking to make sure you really are getting the best deal and not getting taken advantage of (like all the egg people).
If you get a Sunday newspaper then there are fantastic coupons in there. Part of the advise Budget Saving Mom gives to newbies is to cut out every single coupon you come across and save it, because then you will start building up your coupon supply and be ready for EVERY sale whenever it comes along. I do not yet take a Sunday newspaper but I’m very excited to start getting one soon!
If you have any tips, tricks, advise or websites for this beginner I would LOVE for you to leave it in the comment section for me!! As I get more experience or find out any other tricky things I’ll be sure to pass them on!!
