Crafty Beginnings Review and Giveaway

By Johanna

April 3, 2012

I saw these adorable pillowcase dresses on etsy, and I eagerly wanted to do a review and giveaway on them! Isn’t it  so delightful?! What really caught my eye was that these patterns are extra cute, and astonishingly affordable!

Lisa, from Crafty Beginnings, sent one for my littlest girl to test out and we love it! The fit is loose and comfy and it flows so sweetly. The fabric is super soft and thick enough that the white isn’t see-through. My kiddo wore it all day and played in it without ever asking to take it off- which is very unusual for her; she normally takes her clothes off the second we get home! She told everyone we saw that day about her beautiful new dress; she loved it so much she even tried to wear it to bed! The seams are incredibly sturdy and withstood a very rough and tumble day.

I washed it and it came out of the dryer so perfect! I could not be happier with this amazingly inexpensive dress. Lisa’s pillowcase dresses range in price from $8 to $12 and come in a variety of patterns. She can make girls’ dresses in sizes 3/6 mos, 6/9 mos, 12/18 mos, 18/24 mos, and sizes 2 thru 6. If you don’t see exactly what you’re looking for, she will even take requests for custom orders.  Visit her etsy store Crafty Beginnings to check out her stock; she also makes other girls’ and women’s clothing and accessories.

Enter to win a pillowcase dress for your favorite girl! One lucky winner will have the opportunity to pick a pillowcase dress from Crafty Beginnings, or she will custom make your pillowcase dress if the correct size is unavailable. Good luck and happy raffling!!

Easter Egg Lacing Card Review and Giveaway

By Stefanie

March 24, 2012

As I was browsing Etsy one day I came across Cake in the Morn, a store that sells felt stories, flannel boards, puppets and toys. The toy that caught my eye was her Easter Egg Lacing Cards. We have had lacing cards at my house before but they have always been cardboard, and therefore the holes rip when little hands are trying their best to “sew” on them. I thought the felt lacing cards would be a better idea for the little hands at our house and wouldn’t rip. I was concerned, however, that they might be flimsy. After all felt is not that strong by itself. Once I received my card (as pictured on the left) I knew right away that this was NOT a flimsy toy. There were several layers of felt on it making it very sturdy to “sew” on. I also appreciated that the yarn had plastic on the tips so it could easily pass through the holes. This was extremely important in my 2-year-old having success with the card.

I first let me 2-year-old son play with the egg. At first he examined it, but then he jumped right in seeming to know exactly what to do. With every stitch he made he would ask “like this?” and I would tell him he was doing a great job. He was very careful with each stitch but then would toss the egg to make the yarn go through the hole faster. I thought he was very clever to make a game out of it. When he was finished playing he held it up for me to see his design and take a picture. (sorry about the binki, he had orange cracker crumbs all over his face so I let him keep it in his mouth to hide the crumbs!) He was very proud of all his stitches!

My 6-year-old daughter loves lacing cards. She likes to make different patterns and try different stitches she makes up. I gave her the egg to play with and she enjoyed it. She was very particular with how she wanted the egg to look. Look at how hard she was concentrating, she’s got her tongue sticking out and everything!! She was also proud of her work and that she got the stitches all lined up the way she wanted. Both of my kids had a fun time playing with the egg lacing card! We will definitely be taking this to church with us and in the car! What a great quiet toy!

You can get your own customizable Easter Egg lacing cards and other felt toys at Cake in the Morn. Heidi is happy to make you eggs in any color combination you want. The eggs are $4 a piece or you can buy them in sets for a bulk rate. Heidi will be happy to customize your order for exactly what you need! You can also check out Cake in the Morn on facebook and get updates as to what is going on with the store!

Now it is time for you to enter the giveaway and try to win your own lacing card! If you need help with the Rafflecopter entry form, click the link! Good luck!

Feeling like a spanked puppy.

By Johanna

March 15, 2012

So in doing our reviews and giveaways, we found a couple of etsy stores that really stood out to us. (One of which, you will see as a review and giveaway in the coming weeks.) We contacted those store owners and let them know what we were doing and waited for a reply. This is how Stefanie’s business was promoted back in 2009. A new blog sent her a message on etsy stating that they would love the chance to put her product in a review and giveaway. Since this was something she had been a part of before, she was really keen on the idea; we didn’t realize that others would have a reason to take offense to it. The first reply I received was super excited and happy to be a part of something that would help her store prosper. The second was a note from the etsy police stating that someone reported my email to them and I needed to stop spamming! (Obviously, since I only sent 2 messages, I know who reported me…)

Now, I understand etsy’s point of view; the etsy conversation tool is intended for transactions. (which I honestly didn’t realize) It wasn’t the content of the reprimand that bothered me, it was that this woman (who’s product I fell in love with and wanted to help promote) thought that I needed to be reprimanded! I felt like I offered a compliment that was unwelcome, and she told the teacher on me!! Now I’m in the principal’s office! Boo!

Now, I am not the kind of woman who gets knocked down for long. I have found other ways to get a hold of these amazingly talented people whose products I want to promote and want our readers to fall in love with too.

Once my heart left my stomach, I started to think more about this woman that told the teacher on me. Although I think that a simple No thanks would have sufficed, who knows what was going on in her mind? Maybe she didn’t read the entire email and she honestly thought I was spam. Maybe she is a stickler for rules and knew that etsy conversations are strictly for transactions. I decided to give her the benefit of the doubt and a second chance to be a part of our super fun blog. I looked, but my efforts were in vain! She has no fb page and no blog. I guess we’ll never know why she sent me to the principal’s office…

Time Management Tips for a Mom – Guest Blogger

By Stefanie

March 7, 2012

time management How do you get it all done? It’s the age-old burning question that all mothers try to answer on a daily basis! Chores, kids, cooking, shopping, sometimes a business, work, craft, and telephone conversations. And lets not forget sleep! It can be tricky to try and get everything done, but here are some tips and tricks that I use daily to help keep me on track.

  1. Prioritize. At the end of each day I will sit down and write a list of what I would like to accomplish the next day. Then I prioritize. Stars go next to the 3 most important items and then the rest get a 1, 2 or a 3. Start with the stars and work your way down. If you don’t make it to the 3’s, no big deal, just move them to the list for the next day. I try to limit myself to 3 from each category and then have a kind of optional list for if I find myself with a little extra time. This list is mostly crafty stuff or a recipe that I want to try or something like organizing a cabinet or a drawer. Then just in case the baby takes an extra long nap, I will have direction.
  2. Spend time with your kids. My mom once told me that “Your kids won’t be under-foot if they are in your arms.” If you spend even just 5 minutes with each kid, no interruptions, no distractions they feel loved and are more likely to play by themselves for longer. For older kids, you can ask questions and talk to them. Younger kids enjoy getting tickled, reading a book or doing a puzzle. It is amazing to me when I spend just a little bit of time with each of my kids how much better they behave and play nicely.
  3. Crockpot. This handy tool can be a girl’s best friend! You can make almost anything in a crockpot. I have even made spaghetti in the crockpot. It is so handy to throw a meal in earlier in the day and have it ready in the evenings. It always makes our day go more smoothly when I think ahead and cook dinner in the crockpot.
  4. Take 5. When there are several things I need to accomplish, I will take 5 (or even 10) minutes and set the timer. I will allow myself that time to clean up, start laundry or dishes or tidy a room. When the timer goes off, I then go accomplish a task that is more urgent. I find that if I don’t set a timer, I will move from room to room cleaning or tidying up and won’t realize how much time is going by. When there is a timer, you will focus your task a little better too.
  5. Mom time. It is SO easy to get run down and worn out! Take daily and/or weekly time for yourself. Small things like listening to your favorite song while you put away the dishes or larger things like a girls night out can work wonders for your mood and energy levels! I even keep a stash or chocolate or brownies hidden in the pantry and will take a mommy timeout when I feel overwhelmed or run down. The kids think it is super funny that Mommy has timeouts too.
  6. Celebrate! Celebrate your accomplishments each day. Sometimes it is a small as putting on makeup! Other days you could get 5 things done on your list or you maybe you accomplished a task that you were dreading. Remember it doesn’t need to be a HUGE deal. Something meaningful to you. Paint your nails, grab a soda, eat a piece of cake, dance around in the kitchen, or even something like checking your email or facebook. I think of it as my “inner child” that needs a reward for a job well done.
  7. Be flexible. There are times your kids will need more attention and there are times where you will have to drop everything for a sick kid or something else unexpected. Understand that these things will happen and that it is not the end of the world. We don’t have to be SUPER-mom, just MOM.
  8. Schedule your task time. This is especially important for work and craft time. When I start updating my blog, or doing some work on my home business, or even begin a new craft project, it is really easy to lose track of the time. I could easily spend hours and hours on one thing. Just like you set the timer for your 5 minute task completion, set a time for your other tasks as well. If you set aside an hour or 45 minutes to work on a craft, when time is up, task is done. This will help keep you from spending way too long on 1 task and leaving the others undone.

These are the tips that I live by. Are my kids always perfectly dressed with their hair done and clean faces? No. Is my house always perfect? No. But at my house, the mom is a little less stressed, the kids are mostly smiling even if they are dirty, and at the end of the day the things that remain undone will almost always wait until tomorrow.
