Trip to Venice Italy

By Stefanie

May 21, 2013

travel_tuesday Get ready for a tsunami of photos! Venice is the one place I NEEDED to go before I die. I was only there for 36 hours and it was a dream come true. I pinched myself several times to make sure it was really happening! So I have a million pictures I want to share!

IMG_0222 In the summer of 2010 we (my parents and my immediate family) went to Vienna Austria for 3 weeks (that’s going to be a series of posts on its own!). My husband had to go for work training and so the rest of us jumped on board as well! I have loved Austria every since I saw The Sound of Music for the first time, so there was no way I wasn’t going! My parents hadn’t ever been to Europe so they wanted to join in all the fun, and I wanted help with my kids! :) Since we were going to be in Austria for so long we decided to use the weekends as a great opportunity for side trips to other nearby countries. Our second weekend there we rented a car (I have a fun adventure of renting a car in Germany for another post as well!) and drove the 6+ hours to Mestre Italy. It was an incredible drive through the Italian Alps. Old beautiful churches and homes on the hilltops were an amazing site. As we got closer to Mestre we started passing vineyard after vineyard, as well as cornfields (we lived in Kansas at the time so cornfields were normal to us. We joked about how at that moment we couldn’t tell Italy from Kansas.)

IMG_0249 When we got to Mestre we parked the rental car in a parking lot across from the train station. We boarded a train for the about 7 minute ride to Venice. There is a long bridge that takes you from the mainland Italy over to Venice.

These are our first moments on the island of Venice! Since we had all of our luggage we wanted to find out hotel promptly. Our hotel was at the bottom of the Grand Canal and so we bought our Vaporetti (water bus) tickets and headed off down the Grand Canal!

IMG_0276 IMG_0269 IMG_0315

I couldn’t stop taking pictures as we floated down the Grand Canal. I was amazed at how it looked exactly as it had on TV and in movies. I’m not sure why I was expecting something different. It was incredible. Words can’t describe my emotions and the joy I felt at being there. Going under the Rialto bridge was surreal (and a little disappointing, there was graffiti all over it!)

IMG_0339 IMG_0350 IMG_0354

We were the second to last stop on the Vaporetti. The stop after ours was for the Piazza San Marcos… you know from movies like The Italian Job, Casino Royale, The Talented Mr. Ripley and many others. The lovely bridge in the left picture above is the bridge we had to cross to get to our hotel. It was so beautiful wandering the sidewalks of Venice in search of our hotel. The left picture above is right outside our hotel and the right picture above is on the Accademia bridge. Instead of talking the Vaporetti over to the Piazza San Marcos, we decided to walk. Even though it wasn’t that far, it was still a 20 minute walk. There were a lot of twists and turns and smaller bridges to cross. I was surprised we didn’t get lost because there are so many nooks and crannies around.

IMG_0360 IMG_0363 IMG_0371

On our way to the Piazza San Marco there were a lot of restaurant choices. I wanted to eat on the Grand Canal so my husband and I kept going when my parents and my kids stopped to eat in the Piazza San Marcos. We eventually found a lovely Italian (LOL) restaurant. We shared some delicious bread and lasagna. It was crazy expensive. I wish now we would have just sprung for two or two different things. It was delicious!

IMG_0393 IMG_0394 IMG_0406

The next morning we hopped on another Vaporetti and headed to the island of Murano, which is a district of Venice famous for it’s glass. While we were there we watch a glass artisan create that spectacular  horse from the glowing ball of hot glass in the middle picture. Check out the beautiful chandelier, that was in the warehouse where they were working. We also had a similar glass chandelier in our hotel room that was pink. It was incredible to watch them work. It was a very fast process also, it only took about 15-20 minutes to create that horse! IMG_0411 And then all of the sudden it was time to say goodbye. The hours went too fast. We only saw a fraction of the city. I hope that I will be able to go back one day, but if not, I was very blessed to spend 36 glorious hours in Venice Italy.

A Travel Tip with Priceline

By Stefanie

May 16, 2013

We recently went to California for my sister’s in law wedding. Since we needed to buy 4 plane tickets I was doing research and checking prices for a long time. I love to look on sites such as Kayak, Orbitz and Priceline. A lot of travel websites offer the same prices, but every once in a while one of them will be a little cheaper than the rest. Even $10 is reason enough for me to hunt down the best site with the best deal.

You know what Priceline is famous for  Priceline Flights – Select your Exact Flight & time or Name Your Own Price! I have tried on a few occasions the “Name your own price” feature on Priceline. I always get turned down… can’t blame me for trying to get affordable travel right? Well for our California trip the prices of flights were not in budget at all, so I attempted to name my own price again. I did get turned down, but then I got an email with a counter offer! I didn’t know a counter offer was an option. The deal was still pretty good, not as good as I was going for, but it was within budget so I accepted it. Our flight times were also pretty good! No middle of the night travel, which is nice since we were traveling with 3 kids.

Here is another tip, if you do name your own price there is an option to mark a lap child, but you still have to CALL the airline to provide the child’s name and information! Don’t forget that step, or your child won’t be on record and you will have delays!

The moral of my story – keep trying the name your own price on Priceline because it just might work! Or it might get you a counter offer.

Have you ever used name your own price and won?

Cryoow! Review and Giveaway

By Stefanie

May 15, 2013

Disclaimer: I received this product free for review purposes. All experience and opinions are my own. Yours may differ.

IMG_1191 Cryoow! is an amazing company that can take your child’s drawing and turn it into a doll! Their desire in creating friends from drawings is to take children away from the TV, or computer, or video game and get them into their imagination. When children get to play with something they create, the possibilities are endless! It is so easy for your child to include their  own doll that they created into their imaginative play!

IMG_1188 My daughter drew several versions of her doll before settling on the one she liked best. Cryoow! does have a few guidelines to help you create the best doll you can since they make it exactly according to the drawing, as you can see in the first picture. She was so excited to open her doll!

IMG_1190 She could not believe how exact it was to her drawing. I think it surprised her. Since this concept is so unique I think she was amazed that something the created was now real! She was excited to take her doll to bed with her and begin to play! You can see the great detail and hard work that went into creating the doll. We got a cute note that said our doll was hand made by Marlina. Thanks Marlina for the great work!

Cryoow! is happy to  give one of Making of a Mom’s readers their own Cryoow! doll! This giveaway is open WORLDWIDE, so come one, come all and enter to win! This giveaway is open to adults ages 18+. It will run from May 15 – May 29. Enter through the Rafflecopter below! Good luck!

SparkPlay Review and Giveaway

By Stefanie

Disclaimer: I received the following product for review purposes. All opinions and experiences are my own. Yours may differ. If you click links in this post you will be taken to the sponsor’s site.

I have a fun subscription service to tell you about. It is called SparkPlay. SparkPlay is a box full of fun for your kids and for you! Every month is a different themed activity with props, crafts, toys and/or other fun things. Each box has a video that can be watched on the SparkPlay site to help get your imaginations roaring! Since I have only tried one month I don’t know if it is standard or not, but ours also came with a target practice sheet we could print to throw our bugs at, a coloring activity and training exercise.

This month our adventure pack, as they call it, was filled with all things bugs! We had some lady bug wings, bee wings, lady bug wand, bee wand, mesh net, dirt, seeds, a little pot for the seeds, storage bag, wall crawler and other little toy bugs.

IMG_1140

My kids have very large imaginations so we were immediately transformed into little bugs in the big human world around us. We talked about what we did when we saw bugs as a human? (my son squishes them) and then we talked about how we felt about humans now that we were bugs! IMG_1141

They loved playing with the other bugs and wall crawler. They were all stuck on my wall at one point during our first play session.

After they were done exploring the “garden” we decided to plant our seeds. We talked about the relationship between plants and bugs. Why bugs need plants and how some bugs help plants.

IMG_1142

It has been so fun having these new costumes in the house. Whenever a brilliant idea hits they run to the SparkPlay storage bag and pull out their wings and wands and get back to playing! I love the creative and imaginative fun that comes from these props. I love that it allows them to come up with different story lines and see when the fun takes them. I think it is really neat that it doesn’t take much to provide them with hours of entertainment. Just wings and wands have kept them occupied for hours!

IMG_1138

I really love this service! I think it is unique and pretty fantastic! I love even more that SparkPlay is willing to give my readers their own adventure pack! This giveaway is open to US and Canada ages 18+. The giveaway will run for a week, from May 12 through May 19. Winner will be verified and contacted via email. Enter through the rafflecopter below. Good Luck!

My Big Star Chart Review and Giveaway

By Stefanie

May 10, 2013

Disclaimer: I received this product free for review purposes. No other compensation was given.  All experiences and opinions are my own. Your experience may differ. If you click on any links in this post you will be taken to the sponsor’s site.

I don’t know about you, and your experience with your kids, but for us age 3 has been killer! WAY harder than the “terrible two’s.” We are currently living this right now with my 3 year old son. He feels the need to test every rule, boundary, limit…. basically everything that can be tested is being tested. It also got worse with the arrival of the baby 4 months ago and we have not quite recovered. IMG_1135

Since he is struggling in a few areas I reached out to The Victoria Chart Company. The Victoria Chart Company was founded by a Mom (Victoria) who discovered a great reward system that worked wonderfully on her own children and wanted to share it with other parents. These charts build self esteem as children watch their progress! We are going to be using My Big Star Chart for my son. This chart is geared towards children 1+ and includes smiley face stickers for good behavior and gold stars for exceptional behavior.

Together we picked out what behaviors we want him to work on. The chart comes with 8 pre-written stickers as well as 8 blank so you can customize any behavior modification you would like. Here are the items we decided to work on:

  • I’ve eaten my food
  • I shared nicely
  • I’ve been good at bedtime
  • I used my potty
  • I’ve spoken nicely
  • I picked up my toys
  • I was obedient and listened
  • I used my words (instead of a tantrum)

IMG_1137 We hung the chart in the kitchen where every one can see it. It is also at his level so he can put all his own stickers on it. It is amazing how fast he learned what each sticker means because he is able to discuss each one with me. Also, when he earns a sticker he knows right where to put it.

IMG_1153 This is after 4 days of using the chart. We don’t always remember to reward with a sticker, so we are working on making it part of normal daily living, but he is doing good. You can tell which items are easier for him than others. Sometimes before he does an action he says “I’m going to say thank you so I can get a sticker.” hehe Smarty pants! There are still a couple things on the chart that are harder for him to comply with, so we will keep at it! He really wants to earn gold stars, but it is hard for him so hopefully we will just keep at it!

My 7 year old now wants to have her own chart (and I think she needs one for some things) so we have made her a little make shift chart for her to earn stickers that will lead to a bigger reward.

I’m loving the knowledge The Victoria Chart Company has given me and the help it is giving with my kids!! A BIG Thanks to them for letting me review this chart!

You can purchase your own chart with a special discount code! Enter code VCHART15 for 15% off your purchase!
