Creating Summer Memories

By Stefanie

May 30, 2012

Summertime is something all kids start dreaming about the first day back at school. All the adventures they can go on and memories they can make. Having a summer to remember with your little ones doesn’t have to break the bank. It can be created. Using common household items and budget friendly supplies you can visit water parks, go on treasure hunts, and even celebrate your UNBirthday’s without even leaving town or your own backyard.

1) Visiting a waterpark as a kid can be a blast! Visiting as a parent can be financially dreading and stressful if you have younger children. Creating a water park in your own backyard can be just as fun. Using old soda bottles with holes poked in them as homemade sprinklers, clean dish soap bottles as water cannons, and pool noddle’s bent in different directs to form an water obstacle course.

2) Summertime park bucket list. Sit down with your kids, make a list of all the parks in your town or close to you and make a pact to visit each one before summer is over. Pack a picnic, and then write down memories like quickest trip, best playground, most shade, and more.

3) Theme days are a great way to break up the routine of boring summer days. I once surprised my boys with Christmas in July. You can choose other holidays like Easter or Valentine’s Day. Culture day like a day in Italy. Have the kids help you prep a yummy Italian meal.

4) Urban Camping has all the comforts of home, yet the kids will enjoy the experience. Camping can be a challenge when you have little ones. Setting up a “Camp Site” in your own backyard makes camping more convent and enjoyable. Roast marshmallows over the bbq and look at the stars.

5) Have a Random Act of Kindness day: Bake goodies for your neighbors or friends and secretly leave them at their doors, write a note of thanks to a special friend, or even have each member draw a name for which they will do a RAK for that day.

Creating a summer full of memories can start with the simplest things like a bike ride, washing the car or even taking $5 to see who can come up with the most creative, silly and ODD finds from a yard sale. If you teach your children young to appreciate the little things in life they will grow to be confident young adults that are grateful for all life’s blessings.

Dragon Birthday Cake!

By Johanna

May 29, 2012

Last year I made my oldest daughter a dragon cake, and this year, my youngest daughter wanted a dragon cake. I have used box mixes in the past, and they were fine, but this year I looked up a yellow cake recipe from Martha Stewart. It is still a bit crumby when I tried to ice it, but it was fine. Next time, I’ll try to find a different cake mix; one that doesn’t fall to crumbs when you cut it! I’m just not that skilled yet! I used a butter cream icing recipe from BHG.

I looked up dragon cake templates and found this one from Family Fun Magazine! There are 2 round cakes that you cut and put back together. I found it very easy to follow. I used Wilton’s food coloring in blue since that is what she wanted.

Last year, instead of just icing the dragon, I starred the entire thing! It looked really good, but it was a lot of work!

The only thing we did differently was with the fruit slices; we had to cut them in half lengthwise and dab the cut edge in sugar to make them the correct size to fit our dragon feet. Everyone enjoyed the cake, they thought it looked awesome! But as someone who wants to improve thier cake-making skills, I want to find a recipe that isn’t so crumby and also imrpove my skill in icing the cake. Hope you enjoy!
